5 Things to Know This Week: Sunset and Supper, Townhall or Civil War Presentation

Patch gives you a rundown of what's going on around the community.

1. Town Hall Meeting

The Concerned Taxpayers of Quaker Valley will host a townhall meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23 at the Sewickley Public Library to discuss issues of importance to Quaker Valley taxpayers with regard to the school district. The meeting takes place in the community room on the second floor. Pizza and pop will be provided. 

2. Autumn Desserts

Celebrate the turn of the season while making comforting creations at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Sweetwater Center for the Arts. Using the warm flavors of fall, students will whip up delicious recipes such as mini tarts, squash cookies, and apple cinnamon rolls. Materials fee is included in the tuition. Member tuition: $55, Non-member tuition $70. Ages 18 and up.

3. The Civil War in Pennsylvania 

At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, join the Sewickley Valley Historical Society at the Old Sewickley Post Office for a presentation by Michael G. Kraus and Kenneth C. Turner, two of the authors of the new book "The Civil War in Pennsylvania: A Photographic History." The authors will deliver a PowerPoint presentation of highlights from the book, including images relating to the Sewickley area.  Refreshments will be served following the presentation.

4. Sunset and Supper

The Sewickley Valley YMCA will host its inaugural Sunset and Supper event on Saturday, Sept. 28. This night of music, dancing, friends and a great silent auction benefits the YMCA's annual campaign. Registration forms can be found at the Y or online at sewickleyymca.org.

5. Fall Festival & Home Show

Shop at vendors’ stands at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27 to pick out handmade jewelry, candles, decorations, baked goods, organic body products, black and gold decor, and autumn flowers at Masonic Village. The first 100 attendees will receive a free reusable shopping bag. Seniors are also invited to enjoy free refreshments and learn more about retirement living at Masonic Village. Attendees who are interested in active retirement community living may tour the campus and ask questions. Seniors may invite their family to explore the community together. Call 412-749-6862 for more information or directions.
