5 Things to Know This Week

Patch gives you a rundown of what's going on around the community.

1. Fourth of July

Celebrate Independence Day on Thursday, July 4 in Leetsdale with a parade, fireworks and plenty of activities in between at Henle Park. Click here for more details

2. Sewickley Planning Commission

The Sewickley Planning Commission is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Monday, July 1 at the municipal building.

3. Crafting with Maddie

Take a break from the summer heat 2 to 3 p.m. today, July 1 and drop by for an hour of crafting fun with Maddie. Teens can make something to take home or to display in the Teen Department. This is part of the Beneath the Surface: Teen Summer Reading 2013.

4. Nature Play Date

Join Fern Hollow Nature Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 3 in the Natural Outdoor Classroom located in their White Pine Forest. Spend an afternoon of discovery, challenges, building and creative play for as little or as long as you like. Bring a picnic lunch if you'd like and enjoy some electronic free time with your little ones. A small craft is presented each week. This event is free.

5. Summer Jam Sessions

Teens can meet new friends and fellow musicians from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 5 at the Sewickley Valley YMCA's new jam session series. These relaxed, acoustic sessions are geared toward guitarists and other string instrumentalists—though all instrumentalists and vocalists are welcome to come tinker about at the Oasis. Free.
