5 Things to Know This Week: School Days, Scrabble and Public Meetings

Patch gives you a rundown of what's going on around the community.

1. It's Back to School

Monday, Aug. 26 is the first day of school for Quaker Valley students in kindergarten through ninth grades. Quaker Valley students in grades 10 to 12 return on Tuesday, Aug. 27. The first day of school for Sewickley Academy and St. James is Wednesday, Sept. 4.   Get back to school statistics here

2. Teen Advisory Council Meeting

On Monday, Aug. 26 from 6 to 7 p.m., join TAC at the Sewickley Public Library to discuss community issues, plan library events with your peers, and enjoy some tasty snacks. Those interested in volunteering are especially encouraged to attend. No registration is required.

3. Let's Play Scrabble

If you like Words With Friends, chances are you've played the classic game of Scrabble. Put down the technology on Wednesday, Aug. 28 and enjoy a cognitive adventure that's sure to sharpen the mind.  The group meets from 1 to 3 p.m. every Wednesday at the Sewickley Public Library. No registration is needed.

3. Oil and Natural Gas Workshop

Allegheny County Airport Authority and CONSOL Energy are sponsoring a public workshop from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott, 777 Aten Road.  The purpose of the workshop is to teach residents more about oil and gas development plans at Pittsburgh International Airport and the environmental assessment process.  More information here.

4. Town Hall Meeting

Thursday, Aug. 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Findlay Township Activity Center, 310 Main St., Imperial.  With archery season set to begin in September, Sen. Matt Smith and State Rep. Mark Mustio are co-hosting a follow-up town hall meeting to present information and further the discussion regarding hunting on airport property.  More details here.
