A memorial service for Dawn Patterson will be held at noon Saturday, April 27 at the Sewickley United Methodist Church, 337 Broad St.
A memorial service is planned for a Sewickley resident who had battled a rare form of cancer since last summer. Dawn B. (Generals) Patterson, 44, of Sewickley passed away on Wednesday April 24, with her family at her side. Dawn found out she had a rare form of cancer in July and told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review in March that family members were amazed with the amount of support they received from the community. “We are so grateful that people have been so kind throughout the entire process,” she told the Trib. The outpouring of support came in many ways from the Sewickley community. Churches offered prayers, sports teams and individuals held fundraisers, neighbors cooked meals and friends lended support. Joyce Carolyn (Whitney) Smith, age 72, formerly of the Sewickley area, left this earthly life on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople. Mrs. Smith was born in Battle Ground, WA on Feb. 18, 1941, daughter of the late Garold Leroy and Elizabeth Louise (Brown) Whitney. Paul L. Walls, 87, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 31, 2013, at Omni-Manor in Youngstown, OH. Paul was born Sept. 18, 1925, in Sewickley, the son of Paul L. and Vera Smith Walls. He graduated from Leetsdale High School. He worked at National Electric during World War II and attended Geneva College in Beaver Falls, majoring in engineering. He later attended Nyack College in Nyack, NY, graduating with a bachelor's degree in music. Traveling with the college choir as their tenor soloist, he also sang weekends with a quartet. A former Sewickley priest who started a splinter church and was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church has died. C. William Hausen, pastor of Christ Hope Ecumenical Catholic Church in Brighton Heights, died suddenly on Sunday, Feb. 17. He was 77. In 2004, Hausen started the Christ Hope Church in a rented ballroom at the former Sewickley Country Inn. His excommunication was described as a self-imposed consequence of that act, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review said. Hausen had previously delivered a controversial Easter homily in 2002 that led to his transfer from St. James Catholic Church in Sewickley to the Sacred Heart Parish in Shadyside. Dr. Bruce Dixon, the former head of the Allegheny County Health Department, died overnight at UPMC Presbyterian, according to news reports. The county medical examiner's office said Dixon, 74, a Forest Hills resident, died of a blood infection caused by an inflammation of his gallbladder. Longtime funeral director is remembered as loving father, dedicated professional.
Raymond Dixon Copeland Jr., longtime funeral director and former owner of Copeland Funeral Homes, died on Feb. 15 of complications from Influenza. He was 92. Copeland served more than 20,000 families in his seven-decade long mortuary career, according to obituary information provided by the family-operated Copeland Funeral Home. Copeland opened each of his namesake funeral homes—one on Fifth Avenue in Coraopolis in 1954, another on Brodhead Road in Moon in 1969, and a Sewickley branch on Beaver Street in 1998. The funeral home described him as "a hands-on operator, personally involved and always present for his devoted clients." Marie Bernadette Derek Joyce, 78, of Moon Township, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, after resolutely battling heart problems and cancer for many years.
