A Pittsburgh man recently waived two charges of receiving stolen property accused of pawning a stolen $5,000 tennis bracelet and $100 necklace. Franklin Park police said Bartley B. Bailey, 56, of Perrysville Avenue, Pittsburgh, accepted the two pieces of stolen jewelry from friend Jeffrey Masartis. Masartis admitted to police Dec. 14 that he took the items from a Franklin Park home on Lindenwood Drive where he was working as a painter, police said. Police said Bailey pawned the $5,000 diamond tennis bracelet at Coin Exchange in Pittsburgh and received $500. He also pawned a $100 10-carat necklace with a cross for $57.50. The recent actions of the patrolman and the borough fire chief have received special commendations.
Sewickley Police Patrolman Bill Hanlon is being recognized for his quick action that recently saved a man's life on the Sewickley Bridge. Officers had gathered on the Moon Township end of the bridge March 29, where authorities were attempting to talk a mixed martial arts fighter out of jumping. At one point, the man made a movement as if he was going to jump over the side. Hanlon went over a jersey barrier and grabbed the man before he could go, according to borough officials. "This is just a good example of the fine job he does everyday," Sewickley Police Chief James Ersher said of Hanlon, an officer with the department for 12 years. A Franklin Park couple accused of physically abusing and starving two children they adopted from Ethiopia in March will be reunited with their biological children, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. Douglas Barbour, 33, and his wife, Kristen Barbour, 30, of Cole Road, Wexford, are charged with two counts each of endangering the welfare of children and one count each of aggravated assault. Douglas Barbour, a Pennsylvania Deputy Attorney General, is also charged with simple assault, court documents show. Barbour has been suspended from his state job without pay, Attorney General Linda Kelly said in a statement after the couple's arrest Oct. 4. The West Hills DUI Task Force made eight arrests on a variety of charges—and issued 15 citations and 43 warnings—while conducting a DUI roving patrol from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. on April 12-13. According to Moon Township Police Sgt. Douglas Ogden, the West Hills DUI Task Force program coordinator: Eight officers took part in the operation. The officers were from Edgeworth, Leetsdale, Sewickley, Avalon and Coraopolis boroughs; and Moon, Kennedy and Ohio townships. Police are asking for help in identifying a woman in relation to the thefts, which occurred in the parking lot of the Baierl YMCA.
Franklin Park Police are investigating thefts from numerous vehicles in the parking lot of the Baierl Family YMCA. Police said thieves targeted unlocked vehicles and took credit cards from purses parked in the lot at 2565 Nicholson Road. Stolen credit cards were then used to purchase expensive items at local stores including Macy’s and several Best Buys, police said. Police have released a surveillance photo of a female and need help identifying the person. Anyone with information is asked to call the Franklin Park Police at (412) 473-3056. Police are also reminding motorists to lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of sight.

Cranberry Township Police are looking for more information after a man who said he was carrying a bomb attempted to rob the Rite-Aid pharmacy in Cranberry Monday night. Police were called the pharmacy on Route 19 at about 9:25 p.m., Sgt. Chuck Mascellino said in a news release. The man fled the store prior to officer arriving on the scene. “The male suspect reportedly had a bomb in his possession and was demanding drugs from the pharmacist,” Mascellino said. Police were unable to locate the suspect after searching the area. A K-9 officer also assisted in the search. WTAE is reporting that two people were killed and two others injured after a car skidded sideways into the path of another vehicle early today on Route 65 in Ben Avon. The Beaver County Times identified the deceased as 19-year-old David Michael Mooney and 22-year-old Christopher Michael Lantzy, both of New Brighton. Ohio Township Police Chief Norbert Miklos told WTAE one car carrying the two crossed into the other lane and into the path of another oncoming vehicle. Investigators believe speed, bald tires and wet roads played a factor. Two were killed and one injured in the first car. The driver of the second car had serious injuries. Residents can drop off old and unused prescription medications at the Sewickley and Sewickley Heights police stations.
Two local police departments will serve as collection sites for unwanted drugs. The Sewickley and Sewickley Heights police departments will take part Saturday, April 27 in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The event, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency, runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents can drop off unused and old prescriptions at either 601 Thorn St. in Sewickley or 1901 Glen Mitchell Road in Sewickley Heights. Sewickley Police Chief James Ersher said the event allows for medications to be properly disposed of on behalf of residents. “This way people don’t leave their medications in their homes where there’s a chance for abuse,” Ersher said. The mall will reopen for normal business hours on Monday.
The Mall at Robinson was evacuated after a bomb threat was found in a changing room at Sears on Sunday afternoon. WPXI-TV is reporting that a "typed and neatly folded" note stated there were multiple explosive devices in the mall set to simultaneously detonate. The bomb squad was called to the scene, according to KDKA-TV. The mall remained closed after police cleared the scene about 5:30 p.m. Sunday and will reopen Monday, operating under normal business hours.
