Sewickley Illuminates Tonight With Light Up Night Activities

A round-up of holiday events happening tonight and Saturday as part of the annual Yuletide in Sewickley celebration.

Get into the holiday spirit tonight with Sewickley's Light Up Night festivities. The evening begins with music by Dancing Queen from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; the Lighting of the Village with Mayor Brian Jeffe, John Tucci, followed by fireworks is from 6:30 to 7 p.m.; and No Bad JuJu follows with music from 7 to 9 p.m. Area churches and non-profit organizations have also planned activities between 5 and 9 p.m. tonight in conjunction with Light Up Night.   Sewickley United Methodist Church The sanctuary will be open to the community from 5 to 9 p.m. with cookies and caroling, with various local Girl Scout troops leading the songs. Quaker Valley, Sewickley Academy and St. James Cancel Tuesday Classes

Quaker Valley School District, Sewickley Academy, St. James close schools as Hurricane Sandy pushes toward Pittsburgh.

The Quaker Valley School District and Sewickley Academy is cancelling school on Tuesday due to the Hurricane Sandy storm moving in from the East Coast.  Tina Vojtko, Quaker Valley District spokeswoman, said all Tuesday classes have been cancelled "due to adverse weather conditions and the potential for power outages." After-school activities were cancelled Monday and Vojtko said all Tuesday activities are also canceled for the day and evening. Sewickley Academy, St. James School, and Montessori Children's Community have announced closures for Tuesday as well. Heavy winds and flooding are expected in the next 24 hours as the late-season Hurricane Sandy moves west from the eastern seaboard, according to the National Weather Service.
