UPDATE: Moon Township Bear Sighting Reported Monday Morning

A 300-pound bear is first seen ambling through the Moon Plaza parking lot, according to reports.

Moon Police Chief Leo McCarthy called it "extremely unusual"—a 300 to 350-pound bear running through one of Moon Township's busiest shopping centers.  Customers shopping at Moon Plaza spotted a black bear running through the Giant Eagle parking lot at 5:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.  A resident also reported a bear sighting just after 9 a.m. Monday near Flaugherty Run Road.  "It's not the first time (a bear has been seen in Moon) but, this is my 37th year working for the township and we've had maybe three bear sightings in that time," McCarthy said.  "I always thought they hibernated in the winter, but we had a warm spell," he said.  The bear was seen Sunday running toward Robert Morris University's campus, and was then spotted an hour later …

The bear was last spotted heading towards the woods near Interstate 79, Public Safety Director Jeff Schueler said. Police were called to the Buffalo Wild Wings at about 9:30 p.m. after someone spotted the bear in the parking lot, he said. When officers arrived at the restaurant, the bear already was in the tree. Officers monitored the bear until it climbed down from the branches at about 11:20 p.m. In the meantime, residents were asked to steer clear of…

Bear Spotted in North Park Tranquilized

Bear wanders to Hampton Township before tranquilizer takes full effect.

A 245-pound black bear spotted in North Park on Monday night was captured in Hampton Township, according to a report from WPXI. McCandless police were called to the park about 6 p.m. along with Pennsylvania Game Commission officers and started chasing the bear near South Ridge Road, WPXI reported. The bear was spotted near the North Park pool and playing fields, where a number of people were outside, according to WPXI. Film footage showed McCandless, Hampton and game commission officers loading the bear into the back of a truck.
