St. James Pupil Raises Money For Peru Mission

Kellen Auth, 8, began selling bottled water at the Sewickley Farmer's Market to support a special mission in Chimbote, Peru.

Kellen Auth felt it was important to give back and make a difference in the lives of others. The fourth grader at St. James School in Sewickley began selling bottled water every Saturday at the Farmer’s Market and donating the proceeds to the Chimbote Foundation Inc. It was at school that 8-year-old Kellen first learned about the mission, one that his homeroom class is supporting this year. His teacher, Lynda Reilsono said she spoke to the class at the beginning of the year about the mission and those less fortunate. Reilsono said Kellen took in everything she said and applied it. Within the next two weeks, he started bringing in money.  “I think what he did was wonderful," Reilsono said."I was shocked when he came in with all that money…

QV Clears Drinking Water at Edgeworth Elementary

The district placed a temporary ban on drinking water last week after the water appeared discolored.

Quaker Valley school officials have given the all clear to drinking water after discolored water was discovered last week at Edgeworth Elementary School. Use of water was immediately suspended for drinking at the elementary school as a precaution until the water could be tested. Bottled water was provided to students during the interim.  An industrial hygienist from AGX, Inc. has reported the drinking water was well within the standards and is approved for drinking, the district said in a news release.  The specialist tested the water twice over a period of two days in response to a district request, but didn't find a problem, the release said.  "We took extra precautions, which may have seemed unnecessary based on the preliminary tests, …

QV Implements Temporary Ban on Drinking Water at Edgeworth School

School officials say no further problems have arisen since Tuesday and all tests are coming back fine.

Edgeworth parents and district staff received an e-alert Tuesday after Quaker Valley school officials found discolored water at Edgeworth Elementary School. "The use of water for drinking and food preparation was immediately suspended. Samples of water were sent for testing," the alert said. After consulting with the Edgeworth Water Authority and a plumbing contractor, the preliminary analysis revealed no cause for concern. Martha Smith, district spokeswoman, said no more problems have arisen and all tests are coming back fine. Smith said water in the cafeteria comes from a separate source and there was never a problem with food preparation.
