QV Boys Cap Comeback with Thrilling 53-48 Victory in Playoffs

Quaker Valley played against Riverside at Moon Area High School. The team faces Seton LaSalle next.

After an 18-4 season that earned Quaker Valley a #6 seed in the WPIAL playoffs, their season was in peril against #13 Riverside Wednesday night after three and a half quarters at Moon Area High School.   Down eight points, the Quaker Valley seniors knew what needed to be done.   “We’ve been in that situation before," said QV Senior Forward Burke Moser.  "We are a young team, but Nelly (Senior Guard Nelson Westwood) and I won five playoff games last year together.  I think that we weren’t ready for our careers to end.” After Coach Mike Mastroianni called a timeout, QV turned up its defensive pressure and forced several quick turnovers. The senior group then stepped up on offense to draw the game even.    Micah Glenn, a first-year Quaker …

QV Football Opens Season with Thrilling Comeback Win

Senior Quarterback Burke Moser accounts for three fourth quarter scores in win.

Quaker Valley Quarterback Burke Moser wears size 15 shoes, but he isn’t expected to use those big feet to score touchdowns.  But in the QV opener at South Park last night, he did just that.  The Quakers overcame a 190-yard rushing performance from Jared Becker when Moser found the end zone with just 30 seconds remaining to give Quaker Valley the win. South Park dominated the first three quarters of the game, and took a 17-0 lead into the final quarter before QV found it’s rhythm offensively and completed the best comeback in the Quakers recent history.  And they did it against a good South Park team that will likely figure in the Century Conference playoff picture.  QV Coach John Tortorea was happy with the performance. “The players took a…

Glad to see the Cornell athletes having a chance to earn a scholarship. They can help QV get to that next level this year. Jackson and Bartolomucci are special players and winners.   more ›

Quaker Valley Avenges WPIAL Loss at Palumbo Center

The Quakers will face the second seed Monessen on Saturday.

Quaker Valley boys basketball team advanced to the PIAA Quarterfinals on Wednesday night by knocking off Sto-Rox, 47-36, at the AJ Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh.   The victory was especially sweet for QV Coach Mike Mastroianni, whom Sto-Rox had knocked out of the WPIAL Playoffs in consecutive years.   "We felt like we gave them the first game this year. We didn't finish the game. Tonight we finished." Quaker Valley jumped out to an early 12-3 lead powered by the early offense of Jamal Gloster, who also had a stand-out defensive game on the Vikings point guard, Lamont Harrison. Just like the last time the two teams, played, however, Sto-Rox climbed right back into the game and trailed only 12-10 at the half. The game see-sawed through the …

Quaker Valley Holds on for Second Win Behind Senior Vescio

Jordan Vescio and Burke Moser both have big nights as Quaker Valley eclipses last season's win total. QV won 16-13 against South Allegheny.

The wind whipped and the rain fell, but when the fog cleared Quaker Valley walked away with their second victory of the season. After a winless season in 2009 and a one-win season in 2010, the Quakers this year may be onto something.  The Quaker's defense kept the South Allegheny Gladiators out of the end zone four times with goal line stands and turnovers. The Quakers got off to a quick start when quarterback Burke Moser connected with Jordan Vescio on a 73-yard catch and run that put the Quakers up 7-0 on the third play from scrimmage.  Vescio got loose in the secondary on third and 14 when Moser rolled right and threw on the run, hitting him in stride. Vescio did the rest. Moser wasn't surprised it worked. "We put that package in this …

New Coach, New Quarterback, New Start

Head coach John Tortorea and quarterback Burke Moser lead QV to opening win.

New Quaker Valley football coach John Tortorea and first-year starting quarterback Burke Moser didn’t arrive on the local sports scene quietly. Moser threw four touchdown passes and Tortorea led the team to a comeback victory his first night on the sidelines as Quaker Valley defeated rival Cornell, 27-26, Friday night in a non-conference game at Frank Letteri Stadium. In the game that has become known over the years as the battle for the Sewickley Bridge, Moser threw a six-yard touchdown pass to fullback Aaron Cunningham with 5:41 remaining in the game to tie it at 26-26. Quaker Valley kicker Nelson Westwood broke the tie and provided the winning margin by placing his pressure-packed attempt through the uprights. Tortorea referred to …
