UPDATE: Sewickley Valley YMCA Reopens on Monday

The YMCA was closed Sunday due to a broken water pipe.

The Sewickley Valley YMCA has announced the facilities will reopen at 5:15 a.m. Monday after being closed on Sunday, March 10 due to a broken water pipe. All classes held in the exercise studio are cancelled on Monday.  The broken water pipe caused all Sunday events to be cancelled, including the Doug Millar Memorial Spin-a-thon and the Barre class held at the Walter J. Brannon activity center.  The YMCA apologized for the inconvenience. Quaker Valley, Sewickley Academy Cancel Evening Activities Due to Snow

Other events remain on schedule for Saturday.

The snowy weather isn't just causing bad road conditions.  Quaker Valley School District and Sewickley Academy have canceled all activities and athletics for Friday evening due to the inclement weather. Quaker Valley students had an early dismissal today.  Students taking the SATs at North Allegheny tomorrow morning are asked to check the College Board website and the North Allegheny website in case of a cancelation. Quaker Valley also reminds high school students to monitor local news stations or the district website for cancellation information. The middle school Open House Celebration remains on schedule from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. The community is invited to tour the newly renovated school. The event includes student …

Quaker Valley, Sewickley Academy and St. James Cancel Tuesday Classes

Quaker Valley School District, Sewickley Academy, St. James close schools as Hurricane Sandy pushes toward Pittsburgh.

The Quaker Valley School District and Sewickley Academy is cancelling school on Tuesday due to the Hurricane Sandy storm moving in from the East Coast.  Tina Vojtko, Quaker Valley District spokeswoman, said all Tuesday classes have been cancelled "due to adverse weather conditions and the potential for power outages." After-school activities were cancelled Monday and Vojtko said all Tuesday activities are also canceled for the day and evening. Sewickley Academy, St. James School, and Montessori Children's Community have announced closures for Tuesday as well. Heavy winds and flooding are expected in the next 24 hours as the late-season Hurricane Sandy moves west from the eastern seaboard, according to the National Weather Service.

Leetsdale Council Meeting Lacks Quorum; Meeting Rescheduled for Thursday

Only two members of the council were present at Tuesday's meeting.

  Tuesday night's Leetsdale Council meeting lasted from approximately 7 p.m. to 7:01 p.m., just long enough for a call to order and then an immediate adjournment. Only two council members were present, which wasn't enough for a quorum to conduct a meeting, according to state law. Councilmen Mike Bajsec and Wes James were the two board members present, and borough manager Paul Scimio was also in attendance. Three members of the community were also in attendance.  On the slate for discussion were several financial issues, including the $2,162,710 proposed budget for 2012.
