Petition Asks Pennsylvanians to Reject Voter ID Law

The petition has already garnered more than 2,000 signatures.

More than 2,000 people have signed a petition created by an area teacher urging Allegheny County's elections manager not to enforce the new statewide voter ID law. Created by local 8th grade school teacher Steven Singer, of White Oak, the petition will be presented to election division manager Mark Wolosik at 1 p.m. Tuesday in downtown Pittsburgh.  The recently enacted law mandates that each voter present a valid photo ID on election day at the polls, a stipulation that opponents have said will ultimately prevent the poor, the elderly, and people of color in Pennsylvania from voting. "These demographic groups typically lean Democratic and local state Rep. Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny County, went so far as to admit that the voter ID law would…

It’s amazing those who reject the notion that a citizen be required to show an ID to exercise their right to vote are very likely the same folks who support the notion that a citizen be required to show an ID and undergo a background check in order to exercise their right to own a firearm. What a gaggle of hypocrites.   more ›

Wednesday's Lego building challenges promotes childhood creativity and innovation.

Twenty two children and their parents stopped by the Sewickley Public Library Wednesday night for a Lego-building extravaganza. The library provided the Lego bricks and welcomed children to also bring their own from home. Whether a robot or giraffe, a tiger or a dinosaur, all of the children put inspiration and imagination for each creation.  Dani Danylo, children's librarian, said the hands-on program was the first to be offered this summer and Wednesday's proved to be a success. She said the library will likely host another in the coming months, possibly in October. In addition to Lego, coloring activities, snacks, and Lego-related library materials were also provided.  -- Click through the photo gallery! Did you build an interesting …

Marcellus Shale Industry Again Denied in Act 13 Challenge

This time, the Supreme Court on Friday denied a request by Marcellus Shale industry representatives to be a party to the challenge against Act 13.

The Supreme Court on Friday denied representatives from the Marcellus Shale industry the opportunity to participate in an appeal of the injunction against Act 13 filed by multiple municipalities, a doctor and a non-profit. The Public Utilities Commission and the state appealed the Commonwealth Court decision to grant an injunction in the case regarding the zoning portions of the law. Industry representatives had also asked the Commonwealth Court to be a party to the suit at the level of the proceedings. That was also denied. Senate President Pro Tem Joseph Scarnati and House Speaker Samuel H. Smith, also moved to intervene on behalf of the Legislature on appeal—as they did on at the Commonwealth level. No decision has been made on that …

Allegheny County Elections Board Votes To Challenge Voter ID Law

The vote to sue was strictly along party lines.

By a 2-1 vote, Allegheny County’s election board has decided to file a lawsuit challenging Pennsylvania’s new voter identification law.  The two Democrats, board chairman John DeFazio and County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, voted to sue, while Republican Heather Heidelbaugh voted against the measure.  The results of the vote were hardly surprising.  Fitzgerald and several other key county Democrats already announced their intention to challenge the law.  The law, sponsored by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, requires voters to show photo identification before they vote at the polls. After a dry run in the April primary, it is scheduled to take effect for the Nov. 6 general election.  The new Voter ID Act requires each elector who appears to…

Voter fraud is rampant. Overturning this law is nothing more than an attempt by Democrats to protect one of their staunchest voter blocks – those who vote illegally. If the public servants quoted here against the Voter ID Act really cared about the right to vote, they would stop attacking the law for their own political gain and call for tougher penalties against those who commit voter …   more ›

Court Hears Arguments in Act 13 Challenge

A panel of seven judges heard the argument Wednesday morning.

A panel of Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court judges Wednesday morning heard oral arguments in the legal challenge to Act 13—the state’s newly passed law governing Marcellus Shale drilling activities. Seven judges heard the arguments from lawyers representing the state, as well as those representing a cluster of communities—including Cecil Township—which filed the constitutional challenge to the portion of the act that eliminated local zoning control. Cecil attorney John Smith, who represents the communities, doctor and nonprofit making the challenge, said Wednesday afternoon that the proceeding went as well as can be expected—and added that the courtroom was standing-room only. “The president judge understood and framed our argument,” he …
