Hippity, hoppity, Easter's on its way! With a major holiday comes closings of area institutions and businesses. Here's a rundown of what's going to be open or closed. Sewickley Public Library – Closed Friday, March 29 and Sunday, March 31. Sewickley Valley YMCA - Recreational hours 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, March 29 and closed on Sunday, March 31. During holiday hours of operation baby-sitting will be closed. The warm water pool will be open Friday for Family Swim from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All programs will resume on the following business day. For some, the national holiday honoring the prominent civil rights activist is a time to give back and serve the community, perhaps through removing graffiti or picking up litter in a local park. Some borough offices will be closed in observance of Veterans Day on Monday. Here is a list of local openings and closings.
Veterans Day is a day the federal government sets aside—Nov. 11 of every year—to honor the service of all U.S. military veterans. This year, Nov. 11 falls on a Sunday. Many offices and organizations will close Monday in observance of Veterans Day, while some will not. CLOSED: OPEN: A ceremony honoring local U.S. military veterans is planned for today at Sewickley Academy starting at noon. Local veterans are invited to attend. Stores will be closing at 3 p.m.
Wine & Spirits stores will be closing at 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29 due to Hurricane Sandy. According to the Wine & Spirits Facebook page, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board will continue to monitor the weather situation to determine if the stores will remain closed on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Columbus Day is on Monday, Oct. 8 this year.
Declared a federal holiday in 1937 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Columbus Day means several closures and cancellations for services and programs across town. About the Day Columbus Day remembers Italian explorer Christopher Columbus’ long journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the “New World." The voyage was victorious when land was first spotted on Oct. 12, 1492. The day is also considered a celebration of Italian heritage, as well as a huge shopping day in the U.S.

Did Christopher Columbus really discover the "New World" on the second Monday of October? The intrepid explorer is credited with discovering the "New World" on Oct. 12, 1492. But Americans will celebrate Columbus on Oct. 10 this year because, well, that is when the second Monday of the month falls. Declared a federal holiday since 1937, Columbus Day celebrates Columbus' achievements and celebrates Italian-American heritage. Cities across the country will honor the day with parades and festivals. In the Sewickley community, it will pretty much be just another day in the neighborhood. Some places will be closed, though.
