Aleppo Commissioners Approve Changes to Zoning

Township commissioners voted Monday following another public hearing.

Commissioners in Aleppo Township held a final public hearing Monday night on proposed zoning changes before taking a vote to approve the new ordinance. The proposal passed in a 4-0 vote, with Edward Beaman, Joanne Schollaert, Rodney Gartner and Clayton Steup all voting yes. Commissioners President Linda Vescio was absent.  The hearing involving the comprehensive plan represented the fourth in the township since last year in which one hearing was continued. Zoning plans were criticized by some residents who were particularly concerned about a section of land known as Weber's Corner near the corner of Weber Road and Glen Mitchell Road. Reorganizations Bring New Beginnings to Local Municipalities in 2012

Leetsdale Council appoints new officers; other boards change meeting schedules.

At the start of every new year, government bodies hold annual reorganization meetings to swear-in newly elected members, name board officers, set meeting schedules and conduct other business.   Leetsdale's new council moved to make the most changes in 2012.  In Tuesday night’s reorganization meeting, Leetsdale Council appointed Joseph McGurk president and Wes James vice president. Council voted to dissolve the administrative positions of manager, senior clerk and junior clerk. Manager Paul Scimio and junior clerk Sandy Bajsec were removed from their positions. Elizabeth Petalino was reinstated as borough secretary and treasurer. She is also in charge of collecting the local service tax. Council also hired a new solicitor, Megan M. Ott of  …

Aleppo Accepts New Volunteer Firefighters Into the Ranks

Several former Edgeworth volunteer firefighters have joined the Aleppo Fire Department.

  Aleppo Fire Chief Bill Davis said seven former Edgeworth volunteer firefighters have been accepted into the Aleppo Fire Department. Edgeworth Council voted to decertify its volunteer fire department in September becauaw fewer volunteers were providing fire protection in Edgeworth.  According to Davis, most of these new members are already certified, and some have extra qualifications. All live within a five-mile radius of the department, as required. The new firefighters bring the department's membership to include more than 30 members, with 24 active members, seven lifetime members and two on military leave. "We can always use more," Davis said. Aleppo Commissioners Approve Advertising for 537 Plan

Officials focus on installing sewers in the township.

For the citizens of Aleppo Township, a cleaner waste disposal system could be in the future. Commissioners on Monday unanimously approved part of the 537 Plan -- a project to put sewers throughout the township. With the approval, the township solicitor and engineer can now move forward by advertising the project to contractors. The township estimates that the project will cost $10 million. If the bids exceed the estimate, the project will have to be dropped.  The bids, which the township hopes to open in November, can be held for 120 days, after which all can be rejected. Project engineer John Mowry said he expects a large number of contractors to bid for the rights to the project, implying there was a good chance the project would succeed…
