Frugal fashionistas, take note! The popular 2nd Life Prom Dress Sale is happening this weekend at Cranberry Community United Presbyterian Church on Rochester Road in Cranberry Township. Now in its fifth year, the annual community outreach event provides a selection of more than 1,000 new and gently worn formal dresses. Dresses will be displayed on racks by size and all will be sold for just $20 each. Shoes, wraps/shawls, jewelry and purses/clutches will also be on sale at affordable prices. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 16 at the church. Admission to the sale is free. Multiple dressing rooms will be available on site with attendants to help as needed. Since Dick’s Sporting Goods closed its location in the Cranberry Square complex off Route 19 in October and moved to a new, two-story building in the Cranberry Crossroads shopping center on Route 228, there have been numerous rumors regarding what would—and should—occupy the former space, including a L.A. Fitness. Well, the rumors can safely be laid to rest. Dick’s Sporting Goods has submitted a building permit application to renovate the vacated space into a new sporting goods concept store called Field & Stream, according to Cranberry Township’s business hub. The beauty queen from Cranberry Township creates a support page on Facebook as she prepares to appeal the $5 million judgment against her.
Ex-Miss Pennsylvania USA Sheena Monnin is asking for the public’s help in battling a $5 million judgment made against her after she claimed the Miss USA competition was rigged. “This truth has cost me greatly,” she said in YouTube video released New Year’s Day. “I’m at a place where for me to continue to fight this injustice, I need your help. I am not financially able to continue to fight this on my own.” After reaching the maximum capacity 5,000 friends on her Facebook page, the beauty queen also has created the Sheena Monnin Support Page. As of Wednesday the site had close to 1,500 Facebook likes. Cranberry natives (and best friends) Brandon Fusco and Don Barclay will be on opposite sides of the field when the Green Bay Packers take on the rival Minnesota Vikings.
For the second time in a month, two graduates of Seneca Valley High School will play against each other in one of the NFL’s biggest rivalries. Brandon Fusco, a 2005 graduate, and Don Barclay, a 2006 graduate, both are starting offensive linemen in the NFL. On Dec. 30, the Cranberry Township natives will play on opposite sides of the field when the Green Bay Packers take on the Minnesota Vikings. Fusco and Barclay didn’t just go to the same high school together. They were best friends and grew up just five houses apart from each other in Cranberry. After their high school graduation, Barclay went on to play for West Virginia University. Fusco played center at Slippery Rock University. Fusco made his first career start during the first game …

Conservative talk show host and author Glenn Beck will be at the Costco in Cranberry today to sign copies of his new book, Agenda 21. Set in the future, Agenda 21 is the tale of a United Nations program that leads to an authoritarian state. The nation is no longer known as America, but as “the Republic.” There is “No president. No Congress. No Supreme Court. No freedom,” according to a description on Beck’s website. “There are only the Authorities.” Although fictional, the novel is based on an actual program—also called Agenda 21—created by the UN that deals with sustainable development and human impacts on the environment. The Pittsburgh Business Times recently posted the top 10 communities in the region by 2011 home sales. The numbers posted Thursday were based on figures from RealSTATs' listing of total dollar volume. With a total dollar volume of $159, 565, 810, Cranberry was ranked No.1 in the region. Taking the No. 2 spot was neighboring Adams Township. "Cranberry Township earning the No. 1 spot in total homes sales in 2011 is another indication of the value of good planning and the implementation of those plans, including investing in community infrastructure," said township manager Jerry Andree. Daniel and Merily Pompa are sentenced to 16 years probation.
A former Cranberry couple pleaded guilty today to stealing from their adopted children's trust fund to support a lavish lifestyle, said Allegheny County District Attorney spokesman Mike Manko. Chiropractor Daniel Pompa, 46—who had a practice and wellness business in Wexford—and his wife Merily Pompa, 44, were charged in October 2010 with looting the trust funds of the twins, who were orphaned in 2003 when their biological father killed their biological mother and then committed suicide. Following the murder-suicide in Florida, custody of the children was awarded to the Pompas. Merily Pompa is a cousin of the children's mother, Lisa Phillips.
