All vote totals are unofficial until certified by the Allegheny County Elections Bureau but are based on 100 percent of precincts reporting. Democrat Chelsa Wagner, a state legislator from Brookline, easily defeated Robert Howard of Marshall, drawing nearly twice as many votes to win her first term as Allegheny County Controller. Wagner, a business analyst and attorney, most recently has served as the state representative for the 22nd District in the South Hills. Incumbent Ben Frederick loses spot on Leetsdale Council.
Residents of Leetsdale voted for change in Tuesday’s general election, as a slate of newcomers claimed all four open spots for borough council, according to unofficial results. Democratic newcomers Melanie Dunn, Joseph McGurk and Republican newcomer Jeff Weatherby were the top vote-getters for three 4-year seats. Democratic newcomer Linda Michael received the fewest votes. The four were guaranteed to claim the three seats, but a race for a two-year seat also pitted Michael—a Republican write-in candidate—against Leetsdale Councilman Benjimen Frederick, who has served six years on council. Michael received the majority of votes in that race, upsetting Frederick’s bid for re-election, according to unofficial election results. “I would say …

After defeating Republican D. Raja in Tuesday's election, the Democrat and former county council president looks ahead to priorities once in office
Mass transit, Marcellus Shale, property taxes, the airport and the Allegheny County budget will be on Democrat Rich Fitzgerald’s radar when he takes over as county executive in January. Fitzgerald, 52, of Squirrel Hill, defeated Republican D. Raja, 46, of Mt. Lebanon, by a nearly 2-1 margin in Tuesday’s general election. The former County Council member and president celebrated the win with hundreds of supporters at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers hall on Pittsburgh’s South Side. Many wore green T-shirts with the words, “Welcome to Fitzburgh” on the front. Afterwards, he talked with Patch about his first priorities when taking office. “We’ve got a lot of challenges, transit, stopping the reassessment of our county only…

Voter turnout at the local polls hasn’t been much to cheer about, although candidates are confident more voters will show up as the day progresses. “It’s a little bit slow right now,” said Lyvonne Wesche, judge of elections in Leetsdale. “People have been coming in a little at a time.” Wesche said the crowd usually picks up around lunchtime during work breaks and again around dinner time, as residents head home from work. As of 8:30 a.m. only about 20 voters had been to the Leetsdale polling place at the municipal building. Over in Sewickley, Jean Harvey, judge of elections for Ward 1, said voter turnout was also “very slow.” Ward 1 is the largest of Sewickley’s four districts. As of about 9 a.m., Harvey said only 27 voters had been to the…

Despite a scheduling conflict threatening to keep Fitzgerald from attending tonight's debate, the event organizer says it's still on.
A debate between D. Raja and Rich Fitzgerald, candidates vying to become Allegheny County executive, scheduled for tonight at Robert Morris University is still on, despite a scheduling conflict. Earlier this week, the Fitzgerald campaign said scheduling conflicts might prevent the Allegheny County councilman from appearing at the event, which will begin at 8 p.m. Thursday in the university's Academic Media Center. The event's organizer, Carrie Moniot, said, "Fitzgerald has another event to attend tonight, but his campaign manager said that he will try to get to the debate by 8:15 pm." Fitzgerald, a Democrat, is running against Mt. Lebanon businessman Raja, a Republican, to replace Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato in the Nov. 8 …
