How Low Will They Go? Why Experts Predict Sewickley Area Gas Prices Will Drop Even More

See which station has the lowest gas prices in the Sewickley Valley.

The summer driving season is just around the corner, a time when Sewickley area drivers brace for more pain at the pump. But maybe not this year. Jeff Edwin of Ross was pleasantly surprised Monday when he filled up his sport utility vehicle at the Sheetz on Babcock Boulevard for $3.57 a gallon. “Get it while it's less than $3.60, you know? It's a good thing,” Edwin told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review . “I'm just hopeful they stay the way they are, and don't start rising again for as long as they can. I'm an average worker with average pay ... and it makes a big difference in my life.” Retail gas prices have dropped steadily since the end of February because more refineries have come back on line after routine maintenance, and crude oil …

Gas Prices Falling, Just Not as Fast in Sewickley

Experts explain why prices in Ohio are up to 50 cents a gallon cheaper than Western Pennsylvania. See which Sewickley area stations are lowest.

If you live in Cleveland, there's a good chance you could fill up your tank for about $3 a gallon, and that's more than 40 cents a gallon cheaper than in the Sewickley area, according to the AAA. Drivers in five states (Wyo., Utah, Colo., Okla. and Minn.) currently pay less than $3 per gallon at the pump, while only drivers in Hawaii pay more than $4 per gallon, the AAA said. Jeff Lenard, spokesman for the National Association of Convenience Stores, told the Post Gazette that said prices vary for several reasons. One is a different state gas tax rate, which favor Ohio at $46.4 cents a gallon, or 4.3 cents below Pennsylvania's 50.7 cents. Another reason, Lenard said, is because different pipelines and gasoline refineries and wholesalers …

What's Affecting the Gas Prices?

Experts say prices could rise a dime or more a gallon in time for Labor Day.

Nothing like a like a hurricane in the gulf of Mexico, a refinery fire in Venezuela, and an upcoming holiday weekend to create the perfect storm for higher gasoline prices. Nationwide, gasoline prices rose a half-cent a gallon to $3.756 on average for regular unleaded, AAA reported. The cheapest price in the Sewickley area is even lower.  "As of Tuesday afternoon four major refineries, totaling more than one-million barrels per day of refining capacity, have announced their planned closure.  These refineries make up about half of the production capacity in the region where Hurricane Isaac is expected to make landfall," said Michael Green, Manager, AAA Public Relations. Add to that, a deadly explosion and fire at Venezuela's largest oil …

The Lowest Gas Prices Around

Gas prices increase a nickel in Western Pennsylvania.

Gasoline prices have increased slightly in Western Pennsylvania following weeks of declines. The current average price for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline is $3.459, up five cents per gallon from a week ago, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge. After approaching the $100-per-barrel threshold to end last week, crude oil prices declined slightly in Monday’s trading. Crude oil prices increased last week on tightening U.S. inventories, hopes that euro zone leaders were moving to contain that region’s debt crisis, and weakness in the U.S. dollar. The Department of Energy's weekly report showed domestic crude stocks 1.6 million barrels lower than the week prior, putting upward pressure on prices.  Economic strength in Europe put downward …

Gasoline prices dropped even lower this week in Western Pennsylvania, by about 1.7 cents a gallon.  Could it be that winter is near? According to AAA’s Fuel Gauge, it's more about crude oil prices. Crude oil prices have fluctuated the past few weeks and increased in much of October, but the national average price at the pump has remained relatively flat — increasing by only 3.5 cents per gallon during the same period, AAA reported Th average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in this area is $3.463. Local prices remained unchanged from a week ago — except BP, where super and premium gas dropped one cent.   Local prices to compare:

The Lowest Gas Prices Around

Patch helps you compare gasoline prices around the area.

A steady decline in gasoline prices means motorists are shelling out less than they did a week ago or even a month ago, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge. In Western Pennsylvania, drivers are paying 6.9 cents less at the pump this week for a gallon of gasoline compared with last week. AAA reports the average price for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline locally is currently $3.572 vs. $3.60 last week. On average, motorists are paying about 12 cents less than they paid a month ago, AAA reports.   The backstory: News that Libyan rebels have taken control of Tripoli, that country’s capital and leader Muammar Qaddafi’s final stronghold, is encouraging for global oil supply, though there is not yet a clear timeline for when Libyan crude …

The Lowest Gas Prices Around

Patch brings you area gasoline prices to compare.

As the stock market plunged Monday, gas prices also were dropping in Western Pennsylvania. The average price for a gallon of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is $3.699, a drop of 6.1 cents from the previous week, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge. Drivers are paying a little more at the pump than the current national retail average of $3.652.  An increase in crude oil stocks suggests that supply is outpacing demand and puts downward pressure on oil prices. At the close of formal trading on the NYMEX, crude oil settled $5.57 lower at $41.31 per barrel.  In just two weeks the price of crude oil has declined $18.28 per barrel or more than 18 percent, AAA reported. The average price of gas this week last year was $2.783. Here's a list of …

What Do You Think of Our Roads?

Sound off on the state's new plan to raise gas taxes and fees.

Gov. Tom Corbett recently assembled a transportation advisory commission that recommended the state raise the gasoline tax and increase the price of driver’s license and registration fees. How do you feel about the condition of state and local roads, and would you be in favor of paying more for transportation if it improved area roadways? Read the story below and offer your opinions in the comments section. With Pennsylvania needing to raise billions in new revenue to fix the state’s deteriorating roads and bridges, an advisory panel assembled by Gov.
