Daniela Sauro Helkowski of Quaker Heights, Leet Township, is a lifetime resident of the Quaker Valley community. After graduating from Quaker Valley High School, she went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and an education certification from Slippery Rock University. Besides working part-time at her husband’s Allstate Insurance office in Sewickley, she is primarily a stay-at-home mom. She is also a CCD teacher at St. James Parish, a member of the Osborne Home & School Association, chair of the Book Fair, homeroom parent, basketball coach, and a board member of the Quaker Valley Midget Football Association. David Weicht is one of four candidates running for two seats in Region 1, which represents Leetsdale, Bell Acres and Leet Township.
David Weicht, 45, of Leet Township, has been a Quaker Valley School District resident since 1999. He has a degree in psychology from Georgetown University and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Weicht is an attorney and a partner with the law firm of Leech Tishman Fuscaldo & Lampl. He and his wife, CJ, have four children in Quaker Valley schools. Ryan, 13, and Julia, 13, are both in seventh grade; Natalie, 11, is in sixth grade; and Eric, 8, is in second grade. P. Richard Warburton, 48, has lived in Leet Township since 2007. His family moved from Moon, in large part, to be in the Quaker Valley School District. Warburton has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Southampton (UK) and a law degree (J.D.) from Duquesne University. He is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and General Counsel for ChemDAQ Inc., a manufacturer of gas detection monitors for workplace safety in Robinson Township. This is Warburton's first time running for any public office and he is running on a platform of "Quality Education with Fiscal Responsibility." Jonathan Kuzma, 30, of Victory Lane in Leetsdale, is a 2001 graduate of Quaker Valley High School. He attended The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA and graduated in 2005 with a degree in Economics and History. After college, Kuzma began working as a researcher and later as a real estate appraiser for Integra Realty Resources in Pittsburgh, which is a commercial valuation and consulting firm. Kuzma grew up in Leet and has extended family in the district, including his parents Greg and Cindy, sisters Emily and Marissa, grandparents Eugene and Lilian, and an aunt, uncle and their three children. Leet Township police and state game commission officials say coyote sightings are becoming more common.
Beth Martin was surprised this week to see a coyote roaming in the vicinity of Quaker Heights. The wild animal was spotted crossing Camp Meeting Road in Leet Township in the section between Pilgrim Drive and Beaver Street around 3:50 p.m. Wednesday. “I was coming down the hill and it ran from the wooded bank on the right to the left,” said Martin, who owns a St. Bernard, and hoped to warn other residents, particularly pet owners. Leet Township Police Chief William Wanto said it's the first coyote sighting in the area this year, but not at all unusual to hear, particularly in the vicinity of Camp Meeting Road. Santa Claus is dropping into Sewickley and neighboring communities this 2012 season to hear your wishes and pose for photos.
'Tis the season for photos with Santa Claus. On Saturday, Santa made a stop in Sewickley to take photos with kids and pets. He also stopped off in Bell Acres to lunch with good little girls and boys. Here's a list of places you can find jolly old Saint Nicholas in the weeks before Christmas. Sewickley From 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, Santa will be visiting the Cochran Hose Company fire station when the firefighters host "Santa at the Station." Kids can do crafts, take pictures and visit with Santa. There will be fire prevention information, fire truck rides, cookies and refreshments.
