The annual Light Up Night in Sewickley marks the beginning of the holiday festivities, as Yuletide in Sewickley continues Wednesdays and Saturdays through Dec. 22.

Sewickley will kick off the holiday season from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 with the annual Light Up Night celebration. Jennifer Markus of Village Green Partners said there are more highlights to this year’s festivities than in years past. Attendees can again look forward to a street filled with vendors, but this year Markus said there will be even more vendors plus seating for those wishing to eat or rest.  Highlights include the traditional ice carving, horse-drawn carriage rides, sponsored by First National Bank, food and fireworks. In addition, expect a line up of entertainment on two stages placed at Broad and Thorn streets and at Beaver and Chestnut streets. Transportation Detours, Street Closings Set for Pittsburgh's Light-Up Night Festivities, Parade

If you're heading for the annual festivities scheduled for Friday and Saturday around the Golden Triangle, plan your route and parking options first.

Planning to head to Downtown Pittsburgh Friday for Light-Up Night? How about Saturday for the Sounds of the Season Parade or other daylong holiday activities planned throughout the Golden Triangle? Here are schedules and transportation details you'll want to keep in mind. Pittsburgh's 52nd annual Light-Up Night begins at noon Friday, when Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl lights the tree at the City-County Building on Grant Street. Also set for noon: the annual dedication and blessing of the traditional Christmas creche at U.S. Steel Tower on Grant Street. Most festivities begin at 5 p.m. Friday, however, with events scheduled for three stage locations — in Market Square, on the Clemente Bridge and at EQT Plaza. Performers include Joe …

Photo Gallery: A Light Up Night of Fun and Celebration

Sewickley celebrates the start of the holiday season with Light Up Night.

Anna and Emily Novak of Sewickley were excited to attend their fourth Light Up Night, the borough’s annual holiday event that has become a family tradition for the Novak's. The mom and daughter pair arrived a half-hour early as did others, in anticipation of the evening ahead. Street vendors were set up along Broad Street while stores remained open for shopping and live entertainment continued through the evening. From the free hot chocolate at Sewickley Eye Group to the cotton candy, face painting and ice sculptures, Anna Novak said the entertainment was suitable for both adults and kids. “There’s so much here you can do,” she said. “I really like the ice carving.” Her daughter, Emily, 10, said she especially liked the Santa booth over at…

It's Here! Sewickey Lights Up Tonight with Fireworks, Entertainment

Light Up Night runs from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight. Santa arrives at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and stays until 1 p.m.

The holiday season will begin in grand fashion tonight as Sewickley celebrates its annual Light Up Night. Borough officials all agree the winter event in Sewickley is special. “It’s just, people are happy,” said Sewickley Councilwoman Susan Aleshire. “I don’t know how to describe it. There’s something for everyone, and it keeps getting better and better.” One of the newest features is the fireworks. Kirsten Stripay of Village Green Partners, a sponsor of the event, said Pyrotechnica is setting off the fireworks this year. “It’s a nice addition to an already wonderful event,” she said. “Fireworks had been discussed last year, but this was the year capable of handling it.” Stripay said the Sewickley Cemetery has been kind enough to allow the…

Sewickley's Light Up Night is Back in Every Way

Promotion for this year’s Yuletide in Sewickley has been outstanding, and kudos to Village Green Partners for the work they’ve done.

Light Up Night is back, not just the event, per se, but the moniker. It seems the folks behind the sparkle season hoo-ha believed they should get a tribute from all those communities that were using the ‘Light Up Night’ phrase without their blessing. Last year, in Sewickley, I think it was called Get Lit, or Sparkly Bulb Night, Tinkle Time or something like that, but everyone still, in hushed tones and darkened allies, called it Light Up Night. So this year, Sewickley Borough paid the 100 bucks to the Downtown Pittsburgh Partnership, and, now, we can proudly and boldly, without fear of ridicule, litigation or broken thumbs, call the kickoff event for Yuletide in Sewickley Light Up Night ®. This will be the first Light Up Night that I will …

Another Production Finds Stars in Sewickley

Filming took place Friday for a borough holiday promo in Sewickley.

There was more than one major production being shot in Sewickley on Friday. While much of the attention was on Tom Cruise’s latest production shooting exterior shots at the former Sewickley Country Inn -- now the fictional Three Rivers Motel, Jim Price, president of the Sewickley Valley Chamber of Commerce and Sewickley Mayor Brian Jeffe were shooting a promo for Sewickley's upcoming Light Up Night. The celebration runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 2.  The promo will not only provide details of the month long Yuletide in the Village event, but also feature images of previous Yuletide events.  The promo is being produced by Singing Cowboy productions and will be featured on Sewickley Borough’s public access cable channel (PEG-TV).
