People will be able to take a look at North Park from 40 feet in the air.
The Go Ape! Treetop Adventure will open Saturday, April 20 at 9 a.m. between the tennis courts and boathouse at North Park. “This is truly exciting news for Allegheny County residents and visitors who want an opportunity to zip and swing through our trees,” said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald in a statement. “Thanks to the public-private partnership opportunity with Go Ape, we can now offer an experience in our park that we couldn’t have done on our own. Jeremiah’s Place works to prevent child abuse and seeks to provide a relief nursery for children and families.
Later this month, teams and individuals will race to help provide a safe haven for children and families in the community. Registration is now open for the inaugural Jeremiah’s Place 5K Run/Walk and 5 Mile Race: “Where Prevention Meets the Pavement.” The race takes place at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 27 at the North Park Boat House. Would-be lifeguards seeking summer work at Settlers Cabin may take the test March 30.
The Allegheny County Parks Department will hold aquatics tests at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 30, at North Allegheny Senior High School for lifeguards seeking summer employment at pools in county parks. Lifeguards must pass the aquatics examination in order to be considered for positions at Settlers Cabin Park in Robinson, as well as the North, South and oyce county parks for the 2013 season beginning on June 1. Applicants must be age 16 or older. Before taking the test, they must provide a doctor's certificate of a physical examination, a completed application form and a minimum of four references on the back of the application. Burke moved from his hometown of Hermitage to Pittsburgh in 2011, he started searching for a way to get involved with his new community. “I really wanted to build a connection to the area,” he said. Drawing on his past experience as a wraparound facilitator working with children and adults with autism and Asperger Syndrome, Burke came up with the idea of a 5K to benefit the Advisory Board on Autism and Related Disorders. Better known as ABOARD, the Pittsburgh-based nonprofit provides support to those with autism and their families living in Pennsylvania. During the first event last year, the run, which Burke decided to call the Autism Frostbite 5K because it took place in January, attracted more than 300 runners to North Park. “…

Allegheny County and Santa are asking attendees to consider bringing a new toy or book to donate to the DHS Holiday Project.
Santa Claus is taking time out of his extremely busy schedule and visiting North Park to share cookies with local girls and boys, the Allegheny County Office of Special Events announced. The Jolly Old Elf will be at the North Park Boathouse from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 1. The event is free and open to all boys and girls. In addition to St. Nick, the events will include holiday crafts, musical entertainment, KDKA “KidKast,” holiday movies, refreshments, and of course, cookies! The Allegheny County Parks Department will open the North Park and South Park ice skating rinks on Thursday, Nov. 8, weather and conditions permitting. The county's 2012-13 ice skating season will run through mid-March. Admission to each rink costs $5 per day per adult aged 18-59 and $3 per adult aged 60 and older. Children aged 17 and younger can also pay $3 per admission. Senior season passes cost $25 (ages 60 and older). Admission is free for active volunteer firefighters and volunteer emergency medical technicians with a Park Pass Program photo ID. Allegheny County Police are seeking information about an assault on a female jogger in North Park about 5:30 p.m. Monday. The incident was reported on Lake Shore Drive in the vicinity of J.C. Stone Field in North Park, police said. "The report is of a young female jogging in the area when an unknown assailant put a bag over her head and carried her a short distance into a wooded area where she was able to get free and flee," according to a statement from Allegheny County Police. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and Allegheny County Council will host a Sept. 11 flag retirement and remembrance ceremony at North Park's Flag Retirement Plaza at 7 p.m. tonight. The ceremony will include members of all branches of the military, veterans, police officers, firefighters, EMTs, Pine-Richland JROTC, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, according to a news advisory by Fitzgerald's office. The plaza is at the intersection of Ingomar Road and Babcock Boulevard.
16-year-old girl taken to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Allegheny County police are investigating after a 16-year-old girl was injured in North Park Monday evening, according to KDKA. The teen was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh where she is being treated for head and leg injuries, KDKA reported. Police told KDKA the girl is too upset to talk about what happened. Police said they do not know how she was hurt because they have not spoken to the victim yet. Authorities said they are investigating all possibilities. Search dogs were in the park to retrace the girl's steps, police said. Authorities said a woman and her daughter found the teen near a tree just before 6 p.m. Monday night in North Park, according to WPXI.
