Allegheny League of Municipalities, County Executive Rich Fitzgerald designate 21 municipalities as 2013 Banner Communities.
Sewickley and Leetsdale boroughs and Ohio Township are being recognized as three of nearly two dozen "banner communities" throughout Western Pennsylvania. The Allegheny League of Municipalities and Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald recently announced 21 communities that received the special designation. Leetsdale Mayor Pete Poninsky, chairman of ALOM, said the communities chosen have a significant amount of intergovernmental cooperation efforts in place, as well as community activities, and mentoring and educational programs taking place. Obtaining the "Banner Community" status indicates that a community uses best practices in all aspects of operations and governs in an inclusive, collaborative manner, according to a news release…

Grand opening festivities are planned for the new Sheetz off the Mt. Nebo exit of Interstate 79.
Following months of construction work, the newest Sheetz store is prepared to open Thursday off the Interstate-79 Mt. Nebo exit in Ohio Township. As part of the grand-opening festivities, the store is having a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday at the 1910 Mt. Nebo Road location. Stacy Jones, Sheetz spokeswoman, said the first 50 customers in line will also receive a $100 Sheetz gift card, good for food and beverages. "We expect people to be in line before dawn," Jones said. A Sewickley woman was killed Sunday morning in a two-car crash that occurred about 10:30 a.m. in Ohio Township, according to Ohio Township police. Tess Raynovich, 20, of Sewickley was pronounced dead at Allegheny General Hospital, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office. Results of an autopsy being performed today are not yet complete, ME officials said. Raynovich was a 2010 Quaker Valley High School graduate. "It's very tragic, very terrible," said Ohio Township Police Chief Norbert Miklos. The new Sheetz is being built off the Mt. Nebo exit of Interstate 79 at the corner of Mt Nebo and Red Mud Hollow Road.
A new 24-hour Sheetz being built off the Mt. Nebo exit of Interstate 79 is expected to open in mid-November, Ohio Township officials said. Pat Cannon, township clerk, said the store at 1910 Mt. Nebo Road is anticipated to open on Nov. 15, just in time for Thanksgiving travel. She said crews have been working on the new 5,000-square-foot building, doing earth-moving work, since mid-April. On the Sewickley Hills border, the convenience store in Ohio Township will include a gas station, car wash and made-to-order hot and cold foods. Sheetz is now hiring to fill new positions at the clerk. Jobs available include store manager, shift manager, assistant manager, store salesperson and beverage host. Starting on Monday, motorists will encounter single- and alternating-lane traffic on Mt. Nebo Road in Ohio Township while crews repair the bank of a stream, according to The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. If weather permits, workers from M. A. Facchiano Contracting Inc. of Pittsburgh will begin repairing the stream bank along I-279/Parkway North, PennDOT said in a statement. Traffic restrictions will afffect only the portion of Mt. Nebo Road in Allegheny County. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane on Mt. Nebo Road between Arndt and Lowries Run roads as needed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays through Sept. 2. No restrictions are planned for I-279.

The new arrivals, though, would be furry, four-legged and delivered from certain death at five animal control facilities in Allegheny County and the Greene County Humane Society.
