The team of third-graders will head to the 2013 "Worlds Competition" later this month.
A team of local students have advanced to the Odyssey of the Mind “Worlds Competition” and are actively raising funds to support their trip. The seven-member team, coached by Jeff Christensen, will head to the 2013 finals May 22 to May 25 at Michigan State University. The team includes Lilly Capezzuto, Stella Christensen, Ilijana Hasak, Jhon Freddy Krebs, Owen Petronick and Taylor Retzlaff from Osborne Elementary and Isabella Bock from Montessori Children’s Community. Crews are working to install pipe as part of a multi-community sewer interconnect project.
Motorists today will have limited access to Beaver Road and Glen Mitchell Road due to the ongoing sewer interconnect project. Sewickley Manager Kevin Flannery said Glen Mitchell Road and Beaver Road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to allow for installation and connection of pipe. Beaver Road will be closed at McKown Street and Glen Mitchell Road will be closed at Weber Road. The traffic restriction is expected to last only one day and is considered safer than the alternative lane restrictions. Public safety services, school officials and neighboring municipalities have been notified. The group of students have advanced to the Odyssey of the Mind 2013 World Finals next month.
A team of Osborne Elementary third graders recently placed second in the Pennsylvania Odyssey of the Mind competition. The group of students, coached by Jeff Christensen, have advanced to the Odyssey of the Mind 2013 World Finals from May 22 to May 25. The team includes Isabella Bock, Lilly Capezzuto, Stella Christensen, Ilijana Hasak, Jhon Freddy Krebs, Owen Petronick and Taylor Retzlaff. The Osborne students completed a problem called, “Pet Project,” which required the team to build three vehicles, each of which had to use a different method of propulsion. Each vehicle had to successfully run their course three times, bringing with it a piece of a pet to an assembly area. Once all nine parts arrived, the pet was assembled, and the …

Parents of incoming Quaker Valley kindergarten students can register for 30-minute appointments and are encouraged to attend an upcoming orientation.
The annual Kindergarten Round Up for incoming Quaker Valley kindergarten students and their families is Feb. 18 through Feb. 22 at Edgeworth Elementary School. Families will complete the registration process and meet with several school community members including a teacher, librarian, assistant school nurse and parent association representative. Students fare well in WordMasters Challenge
Quaker Valley Middle School students recently won highest honors in the WordMasters Challenge - a national language arts competition entered by approximately 220,000 students annually, according to a statement from the district. The students competed in the very difficult Gold Division of the Challenge. The sixth graders tied for 10th place in the nation in the year's third meet from 191 school teams competing at this grade level and in this division. Mary Elena Savocchi, a third-grade student at Osborne Elementary, won highest honors for year-long achievement. Mary Elena made only three mistakes in the course of the year's three meets, was one of the five highest-scoring third graders in the entire country in the year-end cumulative …

Quaker Valley's Dr. Jillian Bichsel, director of academic services, along with several faculty members will present the informational meeting, with a special focus on new developments in language arts, changes in the state standards, new testing expectations set by the state, updated curriculum on the website and more. Edgeworth police cite Kayleigh Brown, 26, of Pittsburgh with failing to stop at a stop sign for a bus crash on Tuesday.
Quaker Valley school officials and local police are urging drivers to be extra cautious around school buses following two bus-related accidents in just two days. The latest crash happened Tuesday afternoon in Edgeworth at the intersection of Beaver and Chestnut roads outside the police station. “We’ve had complaints in the past about that intersection … that some drivers are not stopping when the buses are stopped,” said Edgeworth Patrolman Paul Yolinsky. But in this incident, Yolinksy said, this school van, described as a short bus, did not have any flashers on. Sewickley police cited Kyleigh Abraham, 24, of Baden, with failing to obey traffic signals.
A car collided Monday morning with a Quaker Valley school bus carrying 20 students to Osborne Elementary School, according to Sewickley borough police. The bus driver, John Dobrzanski, told police he was traveling south at 7:50 a.m. on Beaver Street and had the green light when a Chevy Cobalt that Kyleigh Abraham, 24, of Baden, was driving went through the intersection at Broad Street and in front of the bus. Police said the mechanical arm deflector on the front of the bus struck the bumper on Abraham’s car, causing her vehicle to spin.
