The Winner of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America Contest is ...

This "Pirate Carrying a Mermaid" optical illusion has been named the winner of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America contest. Its creator—and wearer —will receive a $5,000 prize for assembling the most creative and innovative costume.

Ashley Playford dressed up as a pirate carrying a mermaid this Halloween. Well, actually, she dressed up as the mermaid. The result of her creativity has earned the title of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America and a $5,000 grand prize.   It was Playford's use of an optical illusion that won us over. Take a look for yourself at the photo she entered on Peekskill-Cortlandt Patch. Almost 4,000 Patch users entered the contest from Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, showing off costumes ranging from the Eiffel Tower and Honey Boo Boo to a flower pot and a clever interpretation of "binders full of women." National judges chose one finalist from each Patch state (we combined North Carolina & South Carolina for this contest, as well as Washington D.C. and …

Patch's Halloween Costume Contest: And the Winner of the Best Costume in Pennsylvania Is.......

The Pennsylvania winner, who will receive $250, will now be entered to win the $5,000 grand prize in Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America contest.

You know what they say—no (goblin) guts, no glory. Congratulations to Lucian Meckley, who has been selected as the Pennsylvania winner of Patch’s Best Halloween Costume in America Contest. Lucian was chosen from among the adults and children from across Pennsylvania who entered the contest. Parents posted hundreds of costume photos of themselves and their families from this Halloween or from years past. We had lots of ghouls, ghosts, and Honey Boo Boos to choose from, but we were won over by Lucian's recycling truck costume, assembled by Dad and Mom from cardboard, a set of stroller wheels and a frame built from re-purposed wood. As the winner of the $250 prize for the best costume in Pennsylvania, Lucian, of Germansville, Lehigh County, …

Congratulations, Meckley Family! I absolutely loved Lucian's costume. Very thoughtful in construction, with the built in reminder that we should all recycle. I hope you folks take the grand prize.   more ›

SCORE Helps Business Owners

No, there's not a catch. SCORE's experienced mentors will help you take your business to the next level.

When it comes down to it, behind just about every small business is an entrepreneur hoping to turn their passion into a paycheck. But, as many wise business advisers have noted: Hope is not a strategy. Business owners need support to turn dreams into reality. That's why Patch is pleased to announce a new partnership with SCORE, a nonprofit organization with 12,000 business experts nationwide who provide free mentoring to small business owners. The partnership makes sense because we believe that when local commerce grows, the whole community gets stronger. Patch already provides free listings for local businesses and other tools to help build local brands. Whether you're a 10-year-old jewelry designer or a 79-year-old who carves wood knives…

Giving Babies a Healthy Start at Pittsburgh's 'March for Babies'

Patch gives back at the March of Dimes event in Pittsburgh.

Under clear, sunny skies, thousands of people took to the streets of Pittsburgh Sunday to join the March of Dimes' "March For Babies."  The 3.5-mile walk kicked off on Art Rooney Avenue, coursing into PNC Park and across the 16th Street Bridge to Penn Avenue before finishing across the Clemente Bridge in front of PNC Park. The March of Dimes aims to give babies a healthy start by raising money through the march to support research and programs that aid healthy, full-term pregnancies, according to the website.  Participants converged on the North Shore from all over the area, including Sewickley, Ross, Moon and Cranberry, to support the cause.  Patch was there to hand out bottled water to walkers and greet families and children in a royal …
