The Pennsylvania winner, who will receive $250, will now be entered to win the $5,000 grand prize in Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America contest.
You know what they say—no (goblin) guts, no glory. Congratulations to Lucian Meckley, who has been selected as the Pennsylvania winner of Patch’s Best Halloween Costume in America Contest. Lucian was chosen from among the adults and children from across Pennsylvania who entered the contest. Parents posted hundreds of costume photos of themselves and their families from this Halloween or from years past. We had lots of ghouls, ghosts, and Honey Boo Boos to choose from, but we were won over by Lucian's recycling truck costume, assembled by Dad and Mom from cardboard, a set of stroller wheels and a frame built from re-purposed wood. As the winner of the $250 prize for the best costume in Pennsylvania, Lucian, of Germansville, Lehigh County, …

Matt Smith defeated D. Raja for Pennsylvania State Senate with 53% of the vote.
Matt Smith bear hugged supporters and feverishly pumped hit arms in the air moments after learning he had won election to the Pennsylvania State Senate. The normally subdued 3-term state representative showed more emotion than usual after a hard-fought battle against fellow Mt. Lebanon resident D. Raja. Smith takes over the seat formerly held by John Pippy. The district wraps around the South Hills of Pittsburgh from Peters Township up to Findlay. “When you have a message that resonates, then that will trump money every day of the week,” Smith said about being outspent 3-to-1 on the airwaves. “The message we have is resonating with people.” Smith, standing with his wife, Eileen, and three young children, Delaney, Emerson and Jameson, …
Robert Matzie and Kathleen Coder are on the ballot for the 16th House District, which includes Leetsdale, Leet Township and Bell Acres, along with other communities in Allegheny and Beaver counties.
Democratic incumbent Robert Matzie and Republican challenger Kathleen Coder both offer reasons for claiming to be the best choice to serve residents of the 16th House District. Kathleen Coder, 53, of Bellevue, served four years as Bellevue Council president. She is also the founder of Inta-Great, a company that serves as a catalyst for leadership development among private companies, churches, nonprofit organizations and schools. Matzie, 44, of Ambridge, was elected to the state House of Representatives in 2008. Prior to his election he served as mayor of Ambridge, and worked as a state Senate staffer for 14 years. How will you make a difference? Matzie said he has put people before politics as a state representative, and his experience has…

Adrian Shanker, president of Equality Pennsylvania, suggests races of significance to supporters of marriage equality and LGBT issues to watch in Tuesday's election.
Every election is important. Every time we vote, we are deciding who will represent us, and which values are important to us at the time. This election could mark a turning point for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality. This election marks the first time a major-party nominee for president supports marriage equality. From the president on down, here are some races to watch for LGBT equality. The Presidential Race: For the first time in American history, a major-party nominee for president supports marriage equality. Also for the first time in history, a majority of Americans support marriage equality. And for the first time in numerous election cycles, marriage has not been a major wedge between the two nominees. Without a …

Corbett said he will reach out to governors in New York and New Jersey to offer help.
As Pennsylvania cleans up from the damage caused by Superstorm Sandy, Gov. Tom Corbett said 1.3 million customers are without power Tuesday morning, mostly in the southeastern part of the commonwealth. Although the storm was not as bad as it could have been for Pennsylvania, Corbett said neighboring New Jersey and New York were hit hard and he will reach out this morning to the governors of those states to offer resources such as medical personnel and shelter help. "If we have resources available, we will make it available" to those hard-hit states, Corbett said. At a 9 a.m. briefing about the storm that has been downgraded to cyclone status, Corbett noted that thousands have been mobilized to deal with the aftermath including 2,500 out-of…

Researchers have unveiled what they believe is a hallmark study for breast cancer patients and the doctors who treat them, according to the PA Breast Cancer Coalition. Their findings, recently published in the journal Nature and the New York Times, are expected to pave the way for new treatment options in the coming years. The project, funded by a large federal grant, focused on a genetic analysis of breast cancer, which kills more than 12,000 women in Pennsylvania each year. The scientists monitored the tumors of 825 breast cancer patients in the United States. As a result, they found four distinctive types of breast cancer. Within those types, researchers say they identified at least 40 genetic alterations that might be attacked by …

Safran's Supermarket and Robinson's Home and Garden have seen an influx of customers.
Hurricane Sandy isn’t just affecting the weather. Leu Safran, owner of Safran’s Supermarket, said she’s also affecting business. “Governor (Tom) Corbett has closed the roads, so we’re not getting merchandise delivered tomorrow,” Safran said. Although Safran was notified Monday the store's delivery truck wouldn’t be arriving, there was plenty on the shelves Monday for customers, who stocked up on everything from comfort foods like potato chips and doughnuts to essentials such as water, meat and milk. “We’re busy,” Safran said. “Milk is selling very well, meats, water, we’re selling it.” Over at Robinson’s Home and Garden, Manager Bryan Robinson said the Village hardware store was also busy, something the store is used to happening during …

Here are guidelines from the USDA regarding the safety of food in a refrigerator without power.
With Hurricane Sandy predicted to hit us hard today, losing power is a threat. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service prepared a fact sheet for keeping food safe during an emergency, including losing power. The USDA says to "keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature." But, the refrigerator will only keep food safely cold for about four hours if unopened during a power outage, according to the USDA. A full freezer will hold the temperature for about 48 hours if full (24 hours of half full), the USDA says. The USDA emphasizes "never to taste food to determine its safety" and says that you should "evaluate each item separately." Generally, if the temperature in the …
