Tentative Transit Agreement Reached

A tentative contract agreement that could prevent Port Authority service cuts has been reached.

The Port Authority, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 85 and Allegheny County have reached a tentative contract agreement. If approved, the agreement is the first step in preventing the 35 percent service cuts, resulting in layoffs and closing of the Collier Garage and various park and ride lots around the area. The cuts were scheduled to take effect in September. That agreement will be considered by the Local 85 membership on Aug. 19 and the Port Authority Board, which will meet in the days following the union vote.  Details will be made public at that time. Continue to follow Patch as details become available.

The trolley's use to go all over the city! West End, Oakland but PAT eliminated those routes decades ago, They kept the trolley routes where the population boom was - the South Hills. New Deal Could Reduce Port Authority Cuts

Sewickley area bus routes are slated to be eliminated under a current cost-cutting plan.

A deal is in the works to avoid drastic cuts to Port Authority service this fall, according to a report by KDKA. According to the report, negotiations between state, county and union officials are underway to avoid a one-third cut in service—including service in the Sewickley Valley—on Sept. 2. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald told KDKA that if the union, management, and county can come up with about $30 million, Gov. Tom Corbett will match that amount and restore service. If an agreement isn't reached, the Port Authority most likely will move forward with the elimination of various  bus routes.

Disabled Residents, Commuters Speak Out Against Planned Port Authority Cuts

Public transit riders testify today before the Allegheny County Port Authority Board of Directors on planned wide-scale service reductions.

Eric Lindey said looming cuts to Allegheny County public transportation will devastate more than 3,000 clients of Milestone Centers Inc., a Wilkinsburg-based nonprofit that provides services for people with mental disabilities.  The impact may be greatest on those who live in the county's suburban communities, said Lindey, director of the center's intellectual and developmental disability services.  "It's services, medical appointments, the grocery store," he said. "They depend on ACCESS [Paratransit) to get around, and this will only disenfranchise them more than they already are. Towns in eastern Allegheny will be decimated by this."  Hundreds of county residents—many of them people with disabilities or commuters—testified today against …

Occupy Pittsburgh to Rally against PAT Cuts Friday

Port Authority is proposing a service cut of up to 35 percent in March.

As part of Occupy Pittsburgh's call for a week of action, demonstrators will gather at the People's Park at 3 p.m. today before spreading out downtown to various bus stops during rush hour.  Fliers will be handed out at the stops to inform riders about looming cuts to service, who riders can contact to voice their concerns, and how to request a moratorium on all cuts to transit service. Port Authority of Allegheny County is proposing a service cut of up to 35 percent, effective in March. The same reduction was proposed last March, but after a public outcry and demonstrations the cuts were reduced to 15 percent. When combined with the 2011 cuts, the new reduction would slash service hours in Allegheny County in half from 2010. Facts and …

Tiramisu, Anyone? New CMU iPhone App Dishes Out Real-Time Port Authority Schedules

Carnegie Mellon University introduces Tiramisu, a real-time bus and light rail car tracker app, in partnership with the Port Authority.

Pittsburgh transit riders standing at a bus stop want to know the answer to one pressing question: “Where’s my bus?” Thanks to Tiramisu, a new iPhone application developed at Carnegie Mellon University, riders with the popular Apple product will have a new tool to help them find out quickly.   Tiramisu, an Italian word meaning, “pick me up,” is an app that relies primarily on crowdsourcing information from transit riders to determine the location and occupancy level of Port Authority of Allegheny County buses and light rail cars in real time. Mobile apps are easy to install computer programs designed to work within the phone's operating system, expanding its function. “When a rider first activates the app, Tiramisu displays the nearest …

Inbound Service on West Busway Returns to Normal

Port Authority routes to West communities have been detoured since Friday due to a landslide.

Inbound traffic on the Port Authority's West Busway will be back to normal in time for this morning's inbound rush hour, authority spokesman Jim Ritchie said. A landslide Friday between the Sheraden and Ingram stations impaired travel on the busway and grew worse Friday night, Ritchie said in a statement. Crews worked through the weekend to clear debris and reopen one lane of the busway, he said. This will allow for inbound buses to resume travel this morning through the area affected by the slide, Ritchie said. Among the routes resuming normal inbound travel this morning are the G2, G3, G31 and 28X, along with the Beaver County Transit Authority's Route 4. Riders this morning should use stations. The outbound lane is expected to remain …

Port Authority Rejects Union's Last-Minute Proposal

The offer would have saved $18.6 million for the transit agency.

A representative from local Amalgamated Transit Union 85 confirmed that the Allegheny County Port Authority Board of Directors  rejected a last-ditch contract proposal offered by the union Friday. The proposal was meant to stave off a 15 percent service reduction cut and 180 employee layoffs for the Port Authority. The cuts are scheduled to begin Sunday. The board adjourned a contentious meeting Friday to allow union members to vote on the concession proposals. The board will reconvene the meeting at 3 p.m. today. Marty Marks, spokesman for the AFL-CIO, said that union will not vote on alternative proposals offered by Onorato's office.  "The offer was disingenuous and unacceptable," Marks said. "There was $18 million on the table and they …
