Following months of construction, the community was invited to view the $26.5 million finished school from the inside. Many were impressed with what they saw at the Grand Opening Celebration.
Tom Szuba could certainly say that the Quaker Valley Middle School his daughter attends today has been transformed from the school he attended as a youth. “It looks like we got our money’s worth. I mean it really does,” said Szuba of Sewickley, whose eighth grade daughter attends the school and gave the family a personal tour of all her classrooms. The community was invited to tour the renovated $26.5 million school on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during an open house celebration. A steady stream of visitors walked through the spacious school at their leisure, enjoying performances and talking to teachers, administrators and staff who were stationed throughout the building. Middle school principal Sean Aiken said the school day, including arrival and dismissal, went “very well” with the new walkway and new traffic patterns on Harbaugh Street. He estimated about 98 percent of parents followed the correct driving patterns. “We really increased our walking and car riding population over here in Sewickley. We see a lot of kids walking and getting dropped off. It went smoothly,” he said. Sewickley …

Students in grades 6 through 8 have been finding their lockers and touring the new school this week before taking off for the holiday break.
There were plenty of "oohs" and "ahhs" to go around as Quaker Valley Middle School students made their way through the halls of their brand new school building. From the size of the school to the comfort of new chairs, students who entered the $26.5 million renovations for the first time Tuesday were altogether pleased. Some even snapped cell phone and camera photos to capture it all. "It's really different," said Franzi Nace, a seventh-grade student. "I feel like I'm going to get lost." "The chairs are just awesome. They bounce back and forth," added Travis Wiehe, a seventh grader, who also liked the hooks on the side of the desks made for laptops. The seventh graders toured the building Tuesday, a day after eighth graders visited the …

Sue Otto was excited to see the half dozen students arrive from Quaker Valley Middle School to deliver laundry baskets filled with food. The group of eighth-grade student council members delivered a box truck of food donations Thursday that were collected in a school-wide food drive. In all, 35 baskets and 25 bags were delivered. Otto, executive director of the Center for Hope in Ambridge, said the center broke a record last month in helping 534 individuals, 243 being families in need. "Most people at the food pantry, they really have no choice. They need to be here," she said. Otto explained to students that their donations make it possible for the food pantry to serve those individuals, many of them children, elderly or disabled. She …

A school bus carrying Quaker Valley students colides with a car on Little Sewickley Creek Road.
A school bus carrying 16 Quaker Valley middle and high school students was involved in an accident on Little Sewickley Creek Road in Edgeworth. The two-vehicle crash happened around 3 p.m. today when a female driver ended up on the wrong side of the road and her car collided with the bus. Edgeworth police said the bus driver noticed the car, driven by Nancy Carson of Sewickley, edging over the center line. The bus came almost to a complete stop when the car came around and struck the bus, police said. Had the bus driver not stopped, police said the accident could have been more serious. Neither Carson nor the bus driver was injured, police said. Cochran Hose Fire Co. also responded. Quaker Valley spokeswoman Tina Vojtko said no one was …
