Quaker Valley School Board Approves Proposed Budget

A final vote on the spending plan is scheduled for June 18.

The Quaker Valley School Board voted Tuesday night to approve a proposed $41.174 million budget for next school year that doesn't increase taxes, but actually cuts the millage rate as required by county-wide reassessments. The 2013-14 budget proposal lowers the property tax rate from 21.25 mills to a projected 16.93 mills, a decrease that is mandatory as a result of new property assessment numbers by Allegheny County. The millage rate will be recalculated again before a final budget vote on June 18, after the county releases its latest tax assessment figures and processes more appeals. A projected $191,769 gap still remains between proposed revenues and expenses, but district officials plan to use reserve funds to balance out the budget. …

Concerned Taxpayers Group Questions Quaker Valley Assessment Appeal

School officials say the district filed and later withdrew an assessment appeal last year after purchasing the property at 704 Beaver St. in Leetsdale.

A local concerned taxpayers group is questioning the circumstances of a residential property reassessment appeal that Quaker Valley School District filed last year and later withdrew. The ongoing community discussion prompted the district's solicitor to issue a statement Monday that "gross misstatements" were being circulated about the assessment appeal of 704 Beaver St. That home is one of two properties adjacent to Quaker Valley High School that the district purchased last year.  "The matter of the purchase and further use of that property is a fair topic of discussion and disagreement. But it is imperative that the discussion be driven by fact and not by inflammatory fantasy," Quaker Valley Solicitor Pat Clair, said in his statement. …
