Quaker Valley Seniors Lead Quakers into the WPIAL Final Four

Senior Nelson Westwood nets career high 20 in QV upset win.

Senior Nelson Westwood saved a great performance for last on Saturday and Quaker Valley boys basketball is headed to the WPIAL Final Four.   Westwood, who all season filled the role of QV’s top defender and assist leader, played the role of go-to scorer.   He poured in a career-high 20 points in addition to an overall great floor game to lead QV in the 62-61 upset victory. “We knew we were going to get our chances, and luckily we took advantage when the opportunities arose,” Westwood said.   But #3 seed Seton La Salle did not go without a fight. Quaker Valley clung to a one point lead with 16 seconds on the clock on Saturday afternoon at North Hills High School, and Seton La Salle had possession of the ball. SLS Junior Point guard Dale …

QV Boys Cap Comeback with Thrilling 53-48 Victory in Playoffs

Quaker Valley played against Riverside at Moon Area High School. The team faces Seton LaSalle next.

After an 18-4 season that earned Quaker Valley a #6 seed in the WPIAL playoffs, their season was in peril against #13 Riverside Wednesday night after three and a half quarters at Moon Area High School.   Down eight points, the Quaker Valley seniors knew what needed to be done.   “We’ve been in that situation before," said QV Senior Forward Burke Moser.  "We are a young team, but Nelly (Senior Guard Nelson Westwood) and I won five playoff games last year together.  I think that we weren’t ready for our careers to end.” After Coach Mike Mastroianni called a timeout, QV turned up its defensive pressure and forced several quick turnovers. The senior group then stepped up on offense to draw the game even.    Micah Glenn, a first-year Quaker …

QV Seniors Come Up Big; Quakers Advance to PIAA Western Finals

Quaker Valley advances to the Western PIAA Final on Wednesday against section rival Beaver Falls.

Mike Mastroianni is quick to praise his group of seniors, a group that has led the Quaker Valley boys basketball team to a 24-4 record.   On Saturday, they lived up to his praise.  Quaker Valley upset heavily favored Monessen 62-60 at Chartiers Valley High School.  RJ West believes its because the team trusts each other and every player plays an equal role. “We stick together, and we go hard all of the time,”  said West, “we don’t get our heads down because we are all good.  It’s not all one person.  We can all step up at different times.”  Seniors Sam and Joe Peduto had 16 and 13 points, respectively, and repeatedly capitalized on Monessen’s failure to get back on defense after made baskets.  Steven Emch also chipped in 16 points …

The boys basketball team will play Sto Rox at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh.

The Quaker Valley Boys Basketball team, which qualified as the seventh and final seed out of the WPIAL, dispensed District 6 Champion Bishop McCort and advanced with a 61-48 victory Saturday night at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown.  McCort, which is located in Johnstown, Cambria County, had the decided home-court advantage. The crowd of 2,400 focused on QV point guard RJ West from the opening tip. West didn’t mind the attention and led the Quakers with 14 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the field.   “I guess that they thought they could rattle me, but it didn’t change my game.  We played the same way we’ve played every game.” West said. QV Boys Storm into PIAA Playoffs with Blowout Win

The Quakers beat Chestnut Ridge, 88-49, Tuesday night. The boys face the Bishop McCort Crushers at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Coach Mike Mastroianni was worried that his 21-4 Quaker Valley boys basketball team might come out flat after a 10-day layoff following its disappointing loss to Sto Rox on Feb. 25.   The Quakers quickly dissolved those fears Tuesday night by jumping out to a first quarter 23-11 lead over visiting Chestnut Ridge. The team never looked backed, coasting to an 88-49 victory. “It was hard waiting without knowing if we would be in or not.  We believed we were a good enough team to get in the playoffs and make some noise, but we didn’t know if we would get the chance,” said senior Sam Peduto.    The Quakers had three players in double digits, led by Peduto’s 17.  Burke Moser chipped in another 15 and Steven Emch added 14. “Our strength is our …
