Secretary Barry Schoch spent Wednesday meeting with reporters at PennDOT’s District 11 headquarters in Collier Township to outline Gov. Tom Corbett’s plan to uncap the state’s oil company franchise tax.
PennDOT Secretary Barry Schoch has a blunt assessment about the state’s aging transportation infrastructure and the government’s new plan to upgrade it. “Every year we duck this issue and every year the bill becomes bigger,” Schoch said. “It doesn’t go away.” Schoch spent Wednesday afternoon meeting with reporters at PennDOT’s District 11 headquarters in Collier Township to outline Gov. The big highlight of the annual Sewickley Unleashed is the Pet Parade. Beginning at 10:30 a.m., the parade will move through the streets of Sewickley giving pets their day to shine. The cost is $5 per pet if purchased in advance, or $10 per pet if purchased on the day of the event. The parade is open to any animal that can be put on a leash and all proceeds support the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society. There are different ways to enter the Pet Parade — as an individual, as a group, or as a puppeteer. There is no additional fee for group registration — as the cost is only per pet entered within the group. Online registration is open for Jeep owners and volunteers who want to be involved in the 2012 Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival in August in Butler. Last year’s inaugural event attracted more than 30,000 visitors to Butler, the birthplace of the Jeep. "Jeep owners have been contacting us on a daily basis for the past few months because they don't want to miss out on the opportunity to participate with their Jeep," said Patti Jo Lambert, event director. There's still time for anyone interested in attending the Community College of Allegheny County to register for the fall term. Registration will remain open through Aug. 20 for 15-week courses beginning Aug. 22. Students must enroll by Sept. 3 for the 13-week “late start” semester with classes beginning Sept. 6. Nationally, almost 40 percent of the college student population is composed of adults going back to school, compared to 6 percent in 1980. Another 3.4 million older students are enrolled part-time, many training for new careers or upgrading job skills in the current challenging economic climate, according to a CCAC news release.
