Saturdays Take Your Pet to Lunch Day at Sewickley Cafe

Proceeds from the enjoyable lunches benefit Beaver County Humane Society.

Sewickley Cafe is giving a whole new meaning to the phrase “Dog Days of Summer” with its new Yappy Lunches. The lunches began June 1 when Cafe owner, Don Reinhardt, invited local pet owners to bring their pets with them to lunch on Saturdays. “Dogs and cats are welcome, but I would prefer no snakes,” he joked. Pets join owners on the patio at the Cafe from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every Saturday. Part of the proceeds from the lunches goes towards the Beaver County Humane Society. “I wanted to help them with their new building,” said Reinhardt. The Humane Society recently moved into a new location according to Debbie Klesser, chairperson for fundraising. “We so appreciate the efforts of the public – such as the Cafe – to help us with our …

Sewickley Cafe Welcomes Pets for Yappy Lunch

Every Saturday in June, July and August, the Sewickley Cafe will open the patio to pets for lunch in the garden.

When Sewickley Café owner Don Reinhardt opened his restaurant patio to dogs during Sewickley Unleashed  two weeks ago, he couldn’t be sure what to expect. Reinhardt said the Sewickley Café ended up hosting 15 dogs on the outdoor garden patio that day. “It went over well,” Reinhardt said. His idea to welcome four-legged patrons for one special day led to an even better idea: the Yappy Lunch. Starting today, pet owners are invited to bring their dogs for lunch in the restaurant garden. As a pet owner with a soft spot for Golden Retrievers, Reindhardt knows that dogs are considered part of the family in many households. Reinhardt said the patio will be open to dogs every Saturday in June, July and August to help raise money for the Beaver …

Food Fight: Soup Poll a Little Thin

Hard to believe with all the great cafes and restaurants in the Valley, but we didn't get much of a Food Fight going with soups this week.

We know there is good soup bubbling in pots all over Sewickley right this minute because we've had bowls and bowls of it. We know you people are soup aficianados, but why so shy? For this Food Fight, we invited you to nominate your favorite soup from a Sewickley Valley restaurant, diner or take-out shop. And you know how many nominations we got? One. Uno. Un. I. Eva. (Greek for "one," and don't go falling all in love with our brain—we had to look it up.) That one soup was Sewickley Cafe Tomato Dill soup, which is yummy. One boxer does not a title fight make, however, and one B-list celebrity does not a Dancing-With-The Star make. And if George Clooney would have agreed to compete on the show with that dancey ex-girlfriend of his (can we …

A Nighttime Stroll: Sewickley Ghost Walk Spooks Believers and Skeptics

Dozens join a recent charity walk into the shadows and through the streets of downtown Sewickley.

Armed with tape recorders, cellphones and digital cameras, a group of around 40 people recently took to the streets in the Village, expecting to encounter something otherworldly in the dark. Most had taken the familiar walk before, but on this night, the path offered a whole new look at the borough rarely seen on an everyday stroll. Professional medium Lorraine Scott led a mixed group of believers and skeptics on a Ghost Walk, moving from Walnut to Thorn, then over to Broad and Beaver streets. Guests who joined the Ghost Walk on July 22 were encouraged to take lots of pictures and keep their minds open to detecting colder temperatures, different smells and odd sounds. Darby Trovato, a massage therapist at Sean’s Signature Salon & Spa, …

Open House Provides First Look at New Luxury Townhomes

More than 100 VIP guests have been invited to an open house tonight to learn more details about Village at Sweetwater development.

Potential buyers will get a first look tonight at new condominiums planned for the heart of the Village at the intersection of Beaver and Peebles streets. Heartland Homes Inc. is hosting an open house from 5:30 p.m to 8 p.m. at the Sewickley Café to give interested buyers an up-close look at the details, including prices,  of 19 new luxury townhomes in the Village at Sweetwater.  “As of (tonight), the floodgates will be open,” said Sara Williams, new home specialist for Heartland Homes. Cecil-based Heartland Homes is the builder and has been working with Beaver Hall Associates and developer Frank J. Zappala for about three years to reach this point. Once built, Williams said, the custom-built brownstones are going to be well within walking…

Bites Nearby

Bites Nearby: Sewickley Cafe

As you plan your weekend outings, Bites Nearby will give you a sampling every Thursday of the tastiest selections in Sewickley and the surrounding area.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Sewickley Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:   Overview: The Sewickley Café has been a staple on the Village drag for more than 13 years. The back outside courtyard is a perennial favorite for lounging with wine and friends. An extensive American menu is a little pricey, but it's OK for the outrageous, locally made desserts. A bustling, congenial atmosphere hosts lunchtime families, singles, groups of business people and friends. Dinner crowd is a bit older, and the small bar area at the entrance can get lively on a good night. The place is …
