The craft session took place recently at the Sewickley Public Library.
The Edgeworth Garden Club recently held an arts and crafts session at the Sewickley Public Library to make naturalized fairy houses. Members crafted the houses in preparation for the "Fairy Houses Fun" event on April 20 at the Mary Roberts Rinehart Nature Park in Glen Osborne. Natasha Green, a board member of the Osborne Trail and Park Association, said the public will be invited to the event featuring renown author and illustrator Tracy Kane. Kane will read from her “Fairy Houses Series” of books, followed by a lecture offering tips and ideas for building fairy houses. High school teams outnumber registrations in other grade levels.
Though the first round of this year's "Battle of the Books" isn't until next week, the teen competition itself is already being declared a winner. That's because the Sewickley Public Library received a record number of high school team registrations for grades nine through 12. Emily Fear, teen librarian, said the amount of high school registrations outnumber team totals for other grade levels. There are 24 high school teams, 23 seventh- and eighth-grade teams, and 19 sixth-grade teams. "High school is usually much lower than other grades," Fear said. Increased security measures are being explore to prevent thefts in response to recent attempts.
The Sewickley Public Library is exploring additional security measures that go beyond tracking overdue books and unpaid fines, according to a representative on the library board. Quaker Valley School Director Gianni Floro told the board last night that two attempted break-ins have prompted discussions about adding security systems, such as video monitoring. In one case, Sewickley-area police responded to the library for an alarm and found that someone pried open a door. No one was found inside the building during the November incident and police said everything appeared to be in order except for a door with noticeable pry marks.
