Get Out: Pasta Dinner, Pancake Breakfast and Sewickley Series

Patch takes a look at local events happening ahead of the big game.

It’s Friday, and you have no plans for the weekend except for watching the Super Bowl on Sunday. Well, take a look at our five ideas and enjoy some fun ahead of the big game.   Fifth Annual Pasta Dinner When/Where: 5 p.m-9 p.m. Friday at St. Stephen's Church, 405 Frederick Ave., Sewickley.  Why Go: Take a night off from cooking and bring the family to support the Quaker Valley Band. Marching and concert band members will perform in various ensembles throughout the evening. Dinner includes pasta, meatballs, bread, salad, beverages and dessert. All proceeds support the QVHS Band.  Admission: $8 for adults, $6 for students and $5 for senior citizens in advance. Tickets are $1 extra at the door. Free for children 4 and under. 5 Things to Know This Week: Pre-School Open House and Sewickley Series

Learn more about your options for pre-schools and day care centers in the Quaker Valley area. The annual Pre-School Open House runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16 hosted by Sewickley Public Library. Representatives will be available from various facilities to provide information and answer questions about their programs. Fall registration for many of the schools starts in February. No registration is required.   Quaker Valley boys basketball takes on Freedom Area Tuesday, Jan. 15 at home. As students and staff return from holiday break today, Jan. 7 middle school students in grades 6 to 8 will walk the halls under one roof for the first time since construction began. The freshly renovated Quaker Valley Middle School opens today for classes. Watch out for kids crossing the street! The Quaker Valley School District community is extending a helping hand to families on the East Coast devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Today, Jan. 7 is the final day to accept donations, payable to "Quaker Valley Cares." Money will be donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Sewickley Series Partners with Silk Screen on Upcoming Films

Sewickley Academy is collaborating with Silk Screen for the third year in a row to present three films as part of the Sewickley Series.

Three films will be presented to the community beginning in January as part of the Sewickley Series. For the third year in a row, Sewickley Academy has partnered with Silk Screen, a Pittsburgh non-profit organization, to show films celebrating Asian arts and culture. Each film is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a moderated discussion. The films are as follows: 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 in Gregg Theater The feature directorial debut of Academy Award nominated producer Marc Smolowitz, The Power of Two offers an intimate portrayal of the bond between half-Japanese twin sisters Anabel Stenzel and Isabel Stenzel Byrnes, their lifelong battle with the fatal genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF), survival through miraculous …

Sewickley Series: Speaker to Discuss Tourette Syndrome

Marc Elliot will present "What Makes You Tic?" as part of the Sewickley Series.

It is estimated that 200,000 Americans have the most severe form of Tourette syndrome, and as many as one in 100 exhibit milder and less complex symptoms, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at age 9, inclusion speaker Marc Elliot will present his talk, "What Makes You Tic?" on Thursday, Sept. 20 at Sewickley Academy. He is the first Sewickley Series speaker of the 2012-13 school year. Two assemblies are planned for 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in Rea Auditorium and are free and open to the public. The focus of Elliot's talk is tolerance. He will expound on his own disabilities and how people have treated him because of Tourette syndrome, a neurological disorder …

Award-Winning Poet to Give Reading at Sewickley Academy

Award-winning poet Terrance Hayes will make a special appearance Thursday for a “Night of Poetry” at Sewickley Academy. The free event begins at 7 p.m. in Gregg Theater and is open to the public. Hayes, a professor of creative writing at Carnegie Mellon University, is the author of “Wind in a Box,” “Hip Logic” and “Muscular Music.” In 2010, his book “Lighthead” won the National Book Award. His books are available for pre-sale at the Penguin Bookshop in Sewickley and Hayes will sign books after the poetry reading, which is part of the Sewickley Series. Hayes will recite poems from old and new collections. In addition to the free poetry reading, Hayes will conduct a poetry workshop with five Sewickley Academy students and five Summerbridge …

Film Series Challenges Stereotypes

The Silk Screen Film Festival begins Saturday at Sewickley Academy.

Sewickley Academy has again partnered with Silk Screen - a Pittsburgh-based non-profit organization that celebrates Asian arts and culture – to present the Sewickley Series,  a screening of three films throughout January. The second Asian Silk Screen Film Festival will focus on challenging stereotypes. Part of Silk Screen's mission is to showcase the diversity of Asian culture and serve as an educational resource in the region. All films are free and open to the public. The first film of the series, Wings of Defeat, will be presented at 2 p.m. Saturday in Rea Auditorium.   The film will bring viewers behind the scenes of World War II’s Pacific theater to reveal the truth about the kamikaze—the “suicide bombers” of their day.
