Pumpkins Arrive at Sewickley United Methodist Church

Church volunteers unload pumpkins for the annual Pumpkin Patch fundraiser.

Travel along Broad Street in Sewickley and you'll likely discover a fall tradition is back—the Pumpkin Patch at Sewickley United Methodist Church.  More than 50 volunteers pitched in Sunday to help unload a tractor-trailer filled with the first load of pumpkins to arrive this season. More than 800 pumpkins of all shapes and sizes were arranged on the church lawn for the 11th annual Pumpkin Patch. Lou Ann Scott, pumpkin organizer, said the fundraiser benefits the Navajo Indians of New Mexico. The Pumpkin Patch pays for the land lease on the reservation in Farmington, N.M., along with the cost for seeds, cultivation, fertilization, labor, trucking and other necessities. The church keeps a percentage of the proceeds based on what it sells…

Sewickley Pastor Preaches on Roller Skates

The Rev. Russel Shuluga accepted the challenge: if the youth at Sewickley United Methodist Church could raise $1,000 in donations, the pastor would preach wearing roller skates.

Four months ago, the children at Sewickley United Methodist Church presented the Rev. Russel Shuluga with the ultimate challenge. If the kids could raise $1,000 in donations, the pastor had to preach on roller skates. Shuluga accepted the offer, agreeing to preach on skates only after the goal was met. The children reached their goal and on Sunday, the pastor made good on his promise. Shuluga said it’s been years since he's used a pair of roller skates. But on Sunday morning, he skated around the church pews with ease, preaching two morning services on wheels. His sermon was aptly titled, "Skating Through Life."  Shuluga said he prepared for Sunday, practicing on the skates twice at church and once at the Neville Roller Drome Inc., a …

Going Pickin' in the Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkins abound on the front lawn of Sewickley United Methodist Church.

Brady Mansmann searched the grounds at the Sewickley United Methodist Church Tuesday looking for the perfect pumpkin. The 5-year-old found one, then two, before leaving the church steps to search for more, withhis mother, Casey Mansmann of Sewickley, trailing behind. It’s a familiar sight that church volunteers have grown accustomed to during October, when the pumpkin fundraiser attracts young and old in search of the perfect Halloween pumpkin. From parents with children to nursery schools, the pumpkin patch sees its fair share of visitors every year. "The community really supports the church and the pumpkin sale,” said Pat Ferguson, a church volunteer. “People expect it.” Ferguson said as far back as she can remember the church has held …

More than 100 people from 10 congregations, including a new church in Rochester, Beaver County, are expected to participate in this year’s event on Oct. 23.
