Disabled Residents, Commuters Speak Out Against Planned Port Authority Cuts

Public transit riders testify today before the Allegheny County Port Authority Board of Directors on planned wide-scale service reductions.

Eric Lindey said looming cuts to Allegheny County public transportation will devastate more than 3,000 clients of Milestone Centers Inc., a Wilkinsburg-based nonprofit that provides services for people with mental disabilities.  The impact may be greatest on those who live in the county's suburban communities, said Lindey, director of the center's intellectual and developmental disability services.  "It's services, medical appointments, the grocery store," he said. "They depend on ACCESS [Paratransit) to get around, and this will only disenfranchise them more than they already are. Towns in eastern Allegheny will be decimated by this."  Hundreds of county residents—many of them people with disabilities or commuters—testified today against …

Sewickley Council Adopts Final Budget With No Tax Increase

Public safety and road-improvement costs make up the largest portion of the 2012 budget.

Sewickley Council unanimously adopted a $4.8 million budget without a tax increase for 2012. The formal approval Monday night keeps the borough’s total property tax rate at 7.3 mills. This means the owner of a property assessed at $100,000 next year will pay $730 in real estate taxes—the same amount paid in 2011. Council tentatively approved the budget proposal on Oct. 22. Public safety makes up the largest portion of the budget, with police department expenses set at $1.466 million. That amount includes the cost of an additional full-time police officer the borough plans to hire in time to begin working in January. Sewickley has received 25 applications for the position. “Funding the police department…it’s the largest commitment that …

Hi Annie Kirk, We spoke with Edgeworth Borough manager, Marty McDaniel, who told us that Edgeworth was paying about $45,000 annually for its own fire department. This money funded the firetrucks, fire station, repairs, equipment, etc. Now, Edgeworth will pay $50,000 plus $9,000 in insurance costs annually. So it will cost the borough more now, but Edgeworth plans to sell its firetrucks, which …   more ›
