Will You Shamrock Shake It?

Just in time for St. Paddy’s Day, the cult-favorite green drink is back at McDonald’s. Are you feeling lucky?

It has 670 calories, 20 grams of fat and a whooping 107 grams of carbs, but who cares? Yes, we’re talking about the Shamrock Shake–and it has returned to McDonald’s for a limited run. Lucky us! First launched in 1970 as a week-long promotion to help raise money for a "home away from home" project for families of children being treated at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the Shamrock Shake helped raise enough money to buy the first Ronald McDonald House—a seven-bedroom home near the hospital. Since then, more than 300 Ronald McDonald Houses have opened, and the shake has developed a cult-like following, with some fans going so far as to create a website to help Shamrock Shake lovers find the treat. Readers Pick Best Spot to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

And the Readers' Choice is...

Readers had a tough time deciding the best spot in the area for celebrating St. Patrick's Day. But, after nominations and polling, we've declared a first place winner. Rook's East Side Saloon in neighboring Ambridge won the top vote. On Saturday, Rook's is going all out for St. Patrick's Day with its usual Irish extravaganza. The bar opens at 11 a.m., but the extravaganza of Bagpipers and Irish dancers won't begin until 6 p.m. The day also includes Miller Lite specials, a meal of corned beef and cabbage, and of course Guiness and Irish whiskey. "We’ll have green beer,” added Kendra Sauter, bartender and waitress.
