Quaker Valley Hockey Falls Short in State Championship

The team rallied hard, but lost 6-5 in the Pennsylvania Cup final against West Chester East.

Quaker Valley fought hard, but lost 6-5 Saturday to West Chester East in the Class A Pennsylvania Cup final, according to Champs Sports Network. The teams played at the Ice Works Arena in Ashton, PA. The Quakers rallied hard in the third period. The Tribune Review reports that East led, 6-2, with 9:47 remaining in the game, but Quaker Valley got power-play goals to cut the lead in half. QV was looking to clinch its second consecutive state championship title, but still finished a commendable season at 25-1-0.

Quaker Valley Youth Wrestling Grows in Size and Ability

With more than 40 children enrolled, many of them first-year wrestlers, the successful program is reaching new heights—and dominating the wrestling scene.

If you ask Jason Richey, the wrestling coach will tell you that Quaker Valley Youth Wrestling is dominating the local wrestling scene. The first-year program has grown in size and ability over the course of the year with more than 40 local wrestlers ranging from ages 5 to 12 enrolled in the Quaker wrestling program.   Of the 42 wrestlers, only the captains—John Rocco Kazalas, Jack Kazalas and Justin Richey—have any previous experience. "Often a lot of the other coaches come up to me at the end of an event and say there is no way all of your kids are first year wrestlers, but I tell them they are," Coach Jason Richey said in a news release.   "Our Sewickley kids are tough, committed, able to learn the moves and love their sport," he said. Quaker Valley Sports Hall of Fame Nominations Being Accepted

April 30 is the deadline to nominate for the Class of 2013.

The Quaker Valley School District is currently accepting nominations for its Class of 2013 Sports Hall of Fame. Nominations must be received by April 30. Last year, the QV Sports Hall of Fame was reinstated following 10 years of inactivity.  The Class of 2012 included two coaches, four athletes and one team. The plans for 2013 will revolve around another weekend celebration connecting all Quaker Valley athletes, past and present. The Class of 2013 will be announced June 1 and will be inducted during the Second Annual Hall of Fame weekend, slated for Sept. 20 to Sept. 22.  Highlights for the Hall of Fame weekend include introduction of the QV Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2013 during the Quaker Valley varsity football game on Friday, Sept. …

Quaker Valley, Sewickley Academy Cancel Evening Activities Due to Snow

Other events remain on schedule for Saturday.

The snowy weather isn't just causing bad road conditions.  Quaker Valley School District and Sewickley Academy have canceled all activities and athletics for Friday evening due to the inclement weather. Quaker Valley students had an early dismissal today.  Students taking the SATs at North Allegheny tomorrow morning are asked to check the College Board website and the North Allegheny website in case of a cancelation. Quaker Valley also reminds high school students to monitor local news stations or the district website for cancellation information. The middle school Open House Celebration remains on schedule from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. The community is invited to tour the newly renovated school. The event includes student …

QV Athletics: Season Passes and 'Gold Cards' Now Available

Season passes for Quaker Valley home games are now available, as well as "Gold Cards" for district residents 60 and older.

Season passes for Quaker Valley sports are available through the school district's athletics office.   A season pass provides entry to all regular Quaker Valley home games for football as well as boys’ and girls’ soccer and basketball. Season passes do not include admission to WPIAL or PIAA playoff games.  The cost is $50  Quaker Valley residents 60 or older are eligible to receive a "Gold Card" entitling them to FREE general admission to all regular season home athletic events.   In addition, Gold Card members will receive free or discounted admission to selected plays and musical productions, selected adult education classes and other identified district programs. QV Athletes Can Schedule ImPACT Tests

There is no charge to families for this required test.

Quaker Valley High School is currently scheduling ImPACT tests for student athletes in grades 9 through 12 who will be participating in the following fall sports: football, soccer, girls’ volleyball and cheerleading.  There is no charge to Quaker Valley families for this required test.  ImPACT provides computerized neurocognitive assessment tools and services that are used by medical doctors, psychologists, athletic trainers, and other licensed healthcare professionals to assist them in determining an athlete's ability to return to play after suffering a concussion.  A current baseline test must be on file prior to participating in participating in fall sports. Allegheny County Ballfield Applications Available

Baseball, soccer and softball leagues can apply at regional park offices.

Applications for ballfield permits from organized baseball, soccer and softball leagues are being accepted through Feb. 15 at Allegheny County Parks Department's regional parks.  Team representatives must file applications in person at the park offices where the requested fields are located. A certificate of insurance is required with an application for a league permit. Individuals interested in scheduling picnic games may choose from the remaining dates beginning March 1. Applications for these games must also be filed in person at the park offices where the requested fields are located. 'Strong As Steel' Adaptive Track Team Seeks New Members

A new area track-and-field team for athletes with disabilities hopes to compete in national championships.

For one Crescent Township mother, the inspiration came last summer.  In July, Darla Clayton's 8-year-old son, Trent, who has cerebral palsy, competed in the 2011 National Junior Disability Championships as a runner.  Since Trent took up running, Clayton said she has watched her son flourish. At the championships, Trent competed as an independent athlete.  "But he said he wanted to be on a team. We really couldn't find anything in the Pittsburgh area, so we tried to figure out a way to start one," Clayton said.  Clayton and her family began the Strong As Steel team after searching the Pittsburgh area for an adaptive track and field team where her son could train with other young athletes. Open for Play: Sewickley Academy's Frick Field Renovations Complete

School officials say the field will be used for team practices, as well as recess and intramurals.

Sewickley Academy's first phase of renovations has wrapped up with the reopening of Frick Field on the campus of the private school in Edgeworth. Students are now putting Frick Field to use for play, practices and games, according to academy officials, who say the field turf is for varsity, junior varsity and Middle School practices, as well as Lower School recess and intramurals. Mandi Semple, director of community and media relations, said the field work took three months to complete. Overall campus renovations began nearly a year ago in February 2011. All Six Steelers Super Bowl Trophies on Display at Carnegie Science Center

Photos are allowed, but admission must be purchased first.

Through Jan. 1, the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh's Manchester neighborhood (North Side) will display all six Super Bowl trophies won by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The display will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on New Year's Eve and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on New Year's Day. Fans are encouraged to pose with the trophies and to take pictures. However, the opportunity to view the display only comes to those who have purchased a general admission pass to the science center, which costs $17.95 per adult and $11.95 per child (aged 3 to 12 years). Children aged 2 and younger may enter for free. Visitor parking at the Carnegie Science Center is $5 per vehicle for non-members and $3 per vehicle for members.
