Sewickley Vocalist Advances to Kean Quest Semi-Finals

The popular local talent competition, formerly known as Kean Idol, boasts singing sensation Jackie Evancho as a former contestant.

A Quaker Valley High School student is moving on to the semi-final round of the Kean Quest Talent Search. Based on scores from a panel of judges, Emma Huckestein of Sewickley and 14 others from the "Youth Preliminary Round Two" are moving on to the semi-final competition on Sunday, March 17.  Emma, 15, a ninth-grader at Quaker Valley, was among 28 acts who performed Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Kean Theatre. Emma sang "Last Name" by Carrie Underwood. Her hobbies include volunteering and working with various artists at the Pittsburgh Glass Center. She is also interested in "Liespotting" — the art of detecting is someone is lying or being deceptive.  Carmen Michael LoPresti, 18, Jefferson Hills, was voted the favorite among 28 acts. for his …

Gov. Corbett: Too Early To Tell if Funding for Mental Health Treatment Will Increase

Corbett, while visiting St. Barnabas' Crystal Conservatories for a Presents for Patients event, also speaks about the fiscal cliff and Pennsylvania's budget.

Gov. Tom Corbett—while calling for more attention to mental illness in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings—would not commit Thursday to increased funding for mental health treatment. The governor said it is too early in the budget process to commit to increasing or decreasing funding for anything. His remarks came during  a press conference at St. Barnabas' Crystal Conservatories in Valencia after a Presents for Patients presentation. When Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley refers to Marcellus Shale and the natural gas industry in Pennsylvania, he talks about “getting it right” and learning from Pennsylvania’s history. Cawley was the keynote speaker Monday morning at the 25th Annual St. Barnabas CEO Leadership Conference held in Richland Township. His speech was followed by a panel discussion on the theme, “We’ve Got Energy – Earth, Wind and Fire.” “Natural gas is indeed a game changer in Western Pennsylvania,” said Cawley, who was appointed by Gov.
