St. James Catholic Church and School Plan to Celebrate Important Milestones

Community invited to anniversary events for both.

Next year will be an important one for St. James Catholic Church and St. James School. The church, founded in 2013, is celebrating its 150th anniversary, and the school will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. In anticipation of these two milestones, the parish has planned several events over the next year. The anniversaries are important to the parish as well as to the community in order to understand the history of the area, said church member Molly Torbic. She attends the church with her husband, Rodney, and two sons, Ryan, 13, and Kyle, 11. “I think it is important to know our past so we can draw upon it and build for the future,” she said. The Torbics have been members of the church since they moved to Sewickley seven years ago. To …

End Pointe: St. James Student Reaches Goal with Tutus

Grace Bear, 7, had a goal to make 50 tutus for charity before her 8th birthday. With a month left to go, she surpassed that goal.

Last week, with a month left to go, Grace Bear hit her target goal.  “I reached 50,” she told Patch. The 7-year-old had given herself until July 6--her 8th birthday--to make and sell 50 tutus in order to donate the proceeds to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.  As she teetered on the brink of the 50 mark, Grace's mom, Cher Bear, posted a message on Facebook last week that helped surge to the finish line. “As soon as I posted that on my wall, she got two more,” Cher said. Grace, a student at St. James School, was inspired last summer to make a difference after watching her mother cut her hair to donate to the nonprofit Locks of Love organization. Grace’s hair wasn’t quite …

3.14: St. James School Celebrates Pi Day with Pie

With the help of a little pie, St. James took part today in Pi Day during lunchtime at all grade levels.

Wednesday, March 14, is better known as Pi Day and celebrated by math lovers around the world. So what better way to celebrate than with pie? St. James School, along with the generous donations of pies from local bakers, once again celebrated "Pi day" at school today by giving each student a piece of pie following their lunch.  The school received 30 donated pies from 11 different bakeries worth more than $300.  Flavors included Oreo, peach, blueberry, mixed berry and lemon meringue. Students then voted on their favorite pie. It appears the Oreo pie was the winner hands down. Bakeries who donated to St. James included the following: the Ultimate Pastry Shop, Safran's, Giant Eagle in Leetsdale and Camp Horne Road, Eat 'n Park in Sewickley, …

St. James Girls Basketball Goes Undefeated

Eighth-grader Cora Saftner has learned a valuable lesson over the years: It's more about teamwork than winning.

Cora Saftner's basketball team at St. James School is undefeated in its section play so far this year.  Here is what Cora had to say: My basketball team has been playing together since we were in the third grade. For most of us who are now in eighth grade, that makes five years. We have learned the importance of teamwork, and how it affects the way we play the game. One of our mottos adopted over the years is, “My MVP is the team.”  We have all been working hard to stay undefeated. We try to “play like [we] practice,” as Coach Louis Bolen always says. My team and I are trying hard to finish our basketball career at St. James as we started it --- as section champions. My team and I are trying hard to finish our basketball career at St. …
