Betty J. Condit

Betty Condit was a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Bell Acres/Big Sewickley Creek Fire Department.

Betty J. (Mull) Condit, age 87, a 17-year resident of Leetsdale, formerly of Bell Acres, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012 at West Hills Health and Rehab. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on May 5, 1925 to the late James and Hattie Ida Mae (Shrum) Mull. In 1987, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Condit. In addition to her parents and spouse, she was preceded in death by her daughter Roberta Klacik, son-in-law Gregory Bilonick, three sisters and a brother. Loving mother of Betty Aquino (Victor) of Ecomony Borough, Kenneth Condit (Barb) of Fair Oaks, Connie Bilonick of Morgantown, WV and William Condit (Tami) of Freehold, NJ; mother-in-law to Thomas Klacik of Baden; grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of three. …

Sewickley-Area Churches Plan Christmas Worship Services

Sewickley churches list service schedules for Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 and Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

The following churches are opening their doors—and arms—to one and all for holiday services.   Northway Christian Community, Sewickley Valley Christmas Eve services are at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday.   Sewickley United Methodist Church Christmas Eve candlelight services begin with contemporary worship at 5 p.m. and a traditional service at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.   St. James Church Christmas Eve Mass is 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and midnight. The Adult and Bell choir will begin singing at 11:30 p.m. for the midnight service.  Christmas Day Mass is 7:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.    St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Christmas Eve candlelight worship is at 6:30 p.m.    The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley Christmas Eve services are at noon, 5 p.m., 7 p.m…

Unsolved Cases: 'Baby Joseph' Froze to Death in 1996

The newborn infant was left near a Hazelwood church—his mother never found.

Easter Sunday is the day Christians observe Christ's triumph over death and the renewal of life for all beings. That day of celebration turned dark just before Easter services April 7, 1996 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Hazelwood. Two church members discovered the body of a newborn infant in an alley between the church and the adjacent property at Mansion Street and Gate Lodge Way. The baby boy seemed to have been swaddled in a pink towel but rolled out of it at some point during the chilly April night when the thermometer registered a low of 26 degrees. He was unclothed, next to the towel, when they discovered him frozen to death. Dr. Cyril Wecht, then Allegheny County coroner, ruled that the child died …

The Air Force veteran was retired from the Sewickley VFW and Sewickley Hotel.

Richard A. “Dick” Farley, 69, a resident of Sewickley for the past 50 years, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at UPMC Passavant. He was born in Pittsburgh on March 29, 1943 to the late Albert and Dolores (Bowman) Farley. Beloved husband for 50 years of Edith (Tolbert) Farley; loving father of Karen Morrow (Alan) of Moon Township, Richard A. Farley Jr. of Sewickley, Barbara Interval (Gary) of McCandless Township, and Susan Creese (Jon) of Baden; devoted grandfather of Richard Farley III (Victoria), William & Matthew Morrow, Gabrielle & Michael Interval and Jack, Emma & Owen Creese; cherished brother of Kathy Joyce of Sewickley. wow! What a lose to Sewickley. Dick was like a father figure to all of Sewickley kids from the 60's, 70's, 80's.. You could always count on Dick to let the fun begin, but learn how to control everyone. Baccalaureate Encourages Graduating Seniors to Reach their Full Potentials

Graduates, their families and guests were invited to attend the interfaith service Sunday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Carol Emch told the seniors gathered at St. Paul's Lutheran Church it's natural to feel excited about graduation and also nostalgic, knowing things will never be the same. But change is a good thing, she said. "Embrace the change, take it all in. Enjoy it now and make the most of it...You are driving the bus," said Emch, who served on the Sewickley Area Baccalaureate Committee. More than a dozen graduating seniors attended the Baccalaureate Sunday night, an interfaith service that returned this year after several years of absence. Between hymns, readings and prayers, students were commended for their achievements and encouraged to keep a faithful relationship with God as they continue on life's journey after graduation.  The Rev. Katherine E. “Katie” Westehoff, age 79, a life-long resident of Haysville, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Allegheny General Hospital. She was born in Glenfield on May 3, 1932 to the late Louis and Florence (Hanable) Westehoff. Katie was the cherished sister of Anna B. Westehoff of Haysville, Jesse Westehoff (Marcia) of Sewickley, sister-in-law Carol (wife of the late Louis Westehoff) of Sewickley and the late Mary Jane Black (the late Harry) and the late Florence Ciocca (the late Rocco); five loving nieces and nephews Patty Derzipilski (Gary), Rose Ann Schoedel (Tim), Louis Ciocca, Amy Lanzarotta (Tom) and the late Charles Wesley Scott; numerous great nieces and nephews. (Hopkins) Schwartz, Wife of the late Lacy B. Rich, Loving mother of Martha (Thomas R. Sr.) Smith of Sewickley, Grandmother of Thomas R. Jr. and Tyler R. Smith, Sister of Cleo (Lester G. Jr.) Abercrombie of Sewickley, John (Janet) Schwartz of Gibsonia, William (Madeline) Schwartz of Crescent, and Lawrence (Jean) Schwartz of Bell Acres.
