Joyce Smith, Former Owner of Whistlestop Bed and Breakfast in Leetsdale

Smith turned her love of cooking into a way to serve, most notably at St. Stephen’s Christy House and Trinity Seminary in Ambridge, where her husband was a professor of theology.

Joyce Carolyn (Whitney) Smith, age 72, formerly of the Sewickley area, left this earthly life on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople. Mrs. Smith was born in Battle Ground, WA on Feb. 18, 1941, daughter of the late Garold Leroy and Elizabeth Louise (Brown) Whitney. On September 18, 2010, she was predeceased by her husband of 47 years Stephen McCray Smith, Ph.D. She is survived by her children Rebecca Smith Ford (John) of Greenwich, CT, Elizabeth Smith Avrigean of Pomona, CA and Andrew McCray Smith of Galveston, TX; grandchildren Cameron Avrigean of Pittsburgh, and Ethan and Lucinda Avrigean, both of Claremont, CA; as well as sisters Betty Sullivan and Doris Brooks, both of Battle Ground, WA, Jan Pettit and…

My husband and I belonged to a bible home group ,which was held in Joyce and Steve's home, every Tues. evening. Joyce was always the perfect hostess.She always had the greatest smile and sense of humor. Our group was very close and we really enjoyed this fellowship. It made for some lasting and fond memories. St. Stephen's Side-by-Side Ministry Helps Moms

"Side by Side," the women of St. Stephen’s Church service single moms.

Everyone knows that parenting can be a challenging job, but for single moms the job is all that much harder. Realizing that challenge, a group of women at St. Stephen’s have made it their ministry to serve those moms. According to Jenni Bartling, member and co-chair of the boutique, Side by Side was created in 2009 by Andrea Zimmerman, the wife of the then assistant rector. Zimmerman felt single moms were underserved and wanted to empower them with dignity. “It was her goal to provide them with a variety of services to help them in their lives as moms,” said Bartling. The program consists of several facets including the Side by Side Boutique, Sidebar - once-a-month dinners and presentations, and mentors. Bartling said mentors are trained …

Donate a Book in May for 'Better Hearing and Speech Month'

Laughlin Children’s Center is hosting the book drive Monday, May 14 through Thursday, May 31 to raise awareness about the importance of diagnosing and treating communication disorders and reading problems.

As part of national “Better Hearing & Speech Month,” Laughlin Children’s Center is once again hosting a book drive to raise local awareness of the importance of diagnosing and treating communication disorders and reading problems. The book drive runs from Monday, May 14 through Thursday, May 31. Books will be donated to Side By Side, a local program that offers practical help to single mothers and families who have children with special needs, by providing material help, mentoring and support from members, and practical help that uses the gifts of the church to meetthe real demands of everyday life.  Children with weak speech and language skills, as well as those who do not have the opportunity to see and interact with print in everyday …

Nancy Doyle Chalfant

Guests will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, at St. Stephen's Church in Sewickley.

Nancy Doyle Chalfant died peacefully on April 26 at her home in Sewickley. She was 98. Ms. Chalfant was born and raised in Sewickley, and as a child she attended Miss Jane's School there. Later she attended Westover School in Middlebury, CT. She married Henry Chalfant in 1935, and the couple settled on Dundee Farm on Sewickley Heights. During World War II, Nancy served as a nurse's aide while her husband was serving in the Army Air Corps in North Africa and Europe. Her third child, Verlinda, barely survived at birth and was profoundly mentally and physcially disabled. Nancy and her husband chose to keep Verlinda at home at a time when most children similarly afflicted were sent to institutions where they were cared for with little concern …

C. Fred Fetterolf, Retired President of Alcoa

Service to others marks the life of Pittsburgh corporate and community leader C. Fred Fetterolf, who passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2012 due to complications from stroke. He was retired president and chief operating officer of Alcoa, and served on the boards of many for- and not-for-profit organizations, regionally and nationally. Fred was born in Huntington, PA in 1928 and grew up in Rocky Grove, a community near Franklin. He joined the Navy in 1946 and served a year on Aircraft Carrier USS Valley Forge. In 1948, he entered Grove City College, where he met his future wife, Frances Nelle Spang. Dubbed “Fiery Fred” by his teammates, he lettered in football, basketball, and golf. Fred graduated from Grove City in 1952 with a bachelor's …

Quaker Valley Band Parents to Sponsor Annual Pasta Dinner

The fourth annual event will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday at St. Stephen's Church in Sewickley.

The Quaker Valley Band Parents Association will sponsor its fourth annual pasta dinner from 5-9 p.m. Friday at St. Stephen's Church in Sewickley. Marching and concert band members will perform in various ensembles throughout the evening.  "I'm excited about this year's pasta dinner and especially excited for this year's student performances...," said Cory Neville, the Quaker Valley band director. "The students have been working diligently on their music, and the quality of the peer-coaching and teamwork has been incredible."  The ensembles include all flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets and brass. A few soloists also will perform. Holiday Worship: St. Stephen's Church

Hundreds are expected at each of six Christmas services at St. Stephen's this weekend.

The Christmas spirit will be abundant this weekend at St. Stephen's Church. Those hoping to be moved by the nativity story and music will be able to select from several services. The Children's Service will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Christmas Eve in the Grace Commons Auditorium. The children will present videos, readings and special music. "Come early to get a seat," said Stephan Bartling, communications director at St. Stephen's. "The children bring their grandparents and everybody else to that one." Next there will be a candlelight and eucharist service in the sanctuary. Two more candlelight services will follow in the sanctuary at 8:30 p.m. (with a choral and orchestra prelude at 8 p.m.) and 11 p.m. There will be one Christmas Day service…

Nancy J. (Witner) Johns, age 70, a Sewickley resident since 1990, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at Good Samaritan Hospice House. She was born July 11, 1941 in Rochester, PA, daughter of the late William G. Witner and Mary (Trehar) Witner Craig. Beloved wife of David D. Three Rivers Ringers to Perform Christmas Concert in Sewickley

The local handbell ensemble will perform throughout the area.

The Three Rivers Ringers have announced a concert schedule that includes  a stop in Sewickley to —naturally— ring in the Christmas season.  The first concert will be today at 4 p.m. at First United Presbyterian Church in Crafton Heights. Concerts will be held through December in Sewickley, Mt. Lebanon and Evans City. The concerts will feature a mix of traditional Christmas music, pops tunes, classical music and original arrangements. “A lot of existing music are things people are already familiar with, but some people write just for handbells as well,” said managing director Andy Seay. “We’re trying to bring that music to the forefront to show handbells aren’t just for Christmas.” Seay said the collection of non-holiday handbell music has …

Charles Henry Fletcher Jr., of Sewickley, Pa., a prominent retired Banker with Mellon Bank, passed away September 30, 2011. Born in Grosse Point, MI, Aug. 26, 1924 to the late Charles Henry Fletcher & Cara Louise VanCampen, he graduated in 1945 from Cornell Univ. with BS in Mechanical Engineering & later obtained a MBA from the University of Detroit. Mr. Fletcher was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Allegheny Country Club, Edgeworth Club, Duquesne Club & Rolling Rock Club. He joined Mellon Bank in 1960 as Assistant Vice President to head up a new management Development Program.
