The district landed in the top rankings by the Pittsburgh Business Times.
Quaker Valley ranked 8th out of 105 districts in the region and in Western Pennsylvania, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times. The region’s top five districts were unchanged from last year. Upper St. Clair was again ranked no. 1 in the area while Mt. Lebanon and North Allegheny retained the no. 2 and no. 3 spots. Quaker Valley was also unchanged in the eighth spot on the list. Across the state, QV ranked 27th this year, a drop from 24th last year. The newspaper develops the rankings based on three years of PSSA test scores in math, reading and science. The Pennsylvania Department of Education released a list of high schools' average SAT scores for 2012 and Quaker Valley High School made the top 10. Out of 160 Quaker Valley High School students tested, the average verbal score was 532, the average math score was 535 and the average writing score was 523. Upper St. Clair High School topped the list with 343 students tested and an average verbal score of 568. The average math score was 583 and the average writing score was 576. Coming in right behind Upper St. Clair is North Allegheny High School. Out of the 572 students tested there, the average verbal score was 566, the average math score was 582 and the average writing score was 557. Third is Mt. Lebanon High School, where the average …

Deandre Brackensick received a standing ovation from the American Idol crowd after performing “Only the Good Die Young,” only to receive mixed reviews from the panel of celebrity judges. The 17-year-old with Sewickley ties kicked off Wednesday’s show of top 10 finalists with the Billy Joel song as part of this week’s theme. He received a few accolades from judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. The San Jose, CA native is the great-grandson of Sewickley author and historian Bettie Cole and Earl Cole of Ambridge. Lopez told Brackensick she thought his performance was a great way to start the show, likening his laid-back vibe to an “Island-y, Bob Marley-ish kind of feel.” Tyler said he appreciated the song too. “At first I thought it was a…
