Cornell Players Combine With Quaker Valley Football

Players are to start working together as a team on Jan. 3, when weight training begins.

Cornell football players will join the Quaker Valley team starting next year through a cooperative sponsorship agreement, according to Quaker Valley school officials. The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association last week approved the agreement at its Board of Control meeting.  Members of the Quaker Valley and Cornell football teams met earlier last week to get acquainted, disitrict officials said.  “We wanted the team members to meet and understand what the future holds for them," said Quaker Valley varsity football Coach John Tortorea.  "We believe this can be a success partnership since both teams have talent; through teamwork this new program could have a great season next year. There will be some adjustments but we have …

Freshman Cunningham Steps Up in QV's 18-14 Victory over Steel Valley

Senior Jordan Vescio cracks the 100-mark for the first time as underdog QV claws back into playoff contention.

For the Quakers, Friday night started as a game about pride and ended with an unlikely scenario that could land Quaker Valley in the playoffs for the first time since 1999. After last year’s 76-26 Steel Valley blowout, which included an on-field fight, Quaker Valley circled this game on the schedule.  “For us, this game was personal. It’s not a secret that these two teams don’t like each other,” said Burke Moser, Quaker Valley's quarterback . Quaker Valley had to contend with one of the leading rushers in the WPIAL in Dontez Williams. Williams opened the scoring by capping a 60-yard drive on Steel Valley’s first possession with an 11-yard touchdown run and successful two-point conversion.  Quaker Valley didn’t back down and answered with a…

In Case You Missed It: Quaker Valley Triumphs over South Allegheny

In a defensive struggle the Quakers win by allowing only two Gladiator touchdowns.

The South Allegheny banner read "Glads Eat Quakers for Breakfast." That was not the case on a rainy Friday night in Chuck Knox Stadium as the Quakers defeated the Gladiators in a hard-fought game. It was a well-matched contest, with both teams coming in with an overall 1-3 conference record and 0-2 in the section. Final score:  16-13. For a story on Friday's game, click here. Quaker Valley Holds on for Second Win Behind Senior Vescio

Jordan Vescio and Burke Moser both have big nights as Quaker Valley eclipses last season's win total. QV won 16-13 against South Allegheny.

The wind whipped and the rain fell, but when the fog cleared Quaker Valley walked away with their second victory of the season. After a winless season in 2009 and a one-win season in 2010, the Quakers this year may be onto something.  The Quaker's defense kept the South Allegheny Gladiators out of the end zone four times with goal line stands and turnovers. The Quakers got off to a quick start when quarterback Burke Moser connected with Jordan Vescio on a 73-yard catch and run that put the Quakers up 7-0 on the third play from scrimmage.  Vescio got loose in the secondary on third and 14 when Moser rolled right and threw on the run, hitting him in stride. Vescio did the rest. Moser wasn't surprised it worked. "We put that package in this …

Quaker Valley Falls to Rebels with a Cause

Seton LaSalle's Hart and Brumbaugh show leads Rebels to one-sided victory over Quakers.

It was a rough night for the Quakers as they played the visiting Seton-LaSalle Rebels at Chuck Knox Stadium.  The Rebels were a model of execution both offensively and defensively. Kevin Hart, whose father was a standout at Mount Lebanon, was the target of many well aimed Brumbaugh salvos.   S-L quarterback Luke Brumbaugh and receiver Kevin Hart worked their magic on Quaker Valley relentlessly the entire first half.  Quaker Valley was plagued by three and outs as they came up against a powerful La-Salle defense.  The Quaker defense fought desperately to contain Hart.  Nonetheless when the first half came to a close, Hart had already scored all of the games five touchdowns.  By the end of the first quarter, the black and gold were down 28-0…

Quaker Valley Edges Out Cornell 27-26

The varsity boys team is victorious in a nail-biter season opener.

It was a muggy night in Frank Letteri Stadium as Quaker Valley played its season opener against the Cornell Raiders.  There were turnovers, blocked punts, stripped balls and fumbles on both sides, but new head coach John Tortorea logged his first win when the Quakers emerged the victors in a hard-fought 27-26 battle.  The end of the first quarter saw the Quakers behind 12-0, but QB Burke Moser was able to connect with Jordan Vescio and Joe Peduto in the second quarter to rally to a  20-12 lead at the half.  A Raider touchdown in the third quarter narrowed that gap to 20-18, and another Raider touchdown and two point conversion six minutes into the fourth quarter saw Cornell pull ahead 26-20.  A touchdown by freshman Aaron Cunningham tied …
