Get Out: See Owls, Go Fish or Take a Hike

Maybe it's been a busy week and you haven't had a single moment to think about what you're doing this weekend. Patch has five suggestions.

It’s Friday, and you're still trying to decide what to do for the weekend. You're in luck. Sewickley Patch is here with a few ideas.   Pennsylvania's Amazing Owls When/Where: 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Fern Hollow Nature Center in Sewickley Heights.  Why Go: Discover the physical adaptations and habits of Pennsylvania’s nocturnal birds of prey. Bob Van NewKirk, a volunteer with the Audubon Society of Western PA, will present the 90-minute interactive program using props and posters. Meet live owls and take a hike to call for owls. Geared for age 6 and up. Admission: $7 for members; $10 for non-members. Winter Activities Offer Fun for All Ages

Looking for some wintertime fun? Here's a roundup of just a few ways to find it around Pittsburgh.

Just because the days are shorter and colder, doesn’t mean opportunities to be active are gone until spring. Our area offers any number of ways to get out, whether by foot, snowshoe or ice skate. Walks and Hikes Hitting the trails is something that can be done any time of year, and local groups, like Pittsburgh-based Venture Outdoors, are making that easier than ever with scheduled outings that range from high intensity fitness hikes to more laid-back events where you can take in the sights of the season. A great example of that is the group’s Winter Brew Tasting Hike, to be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 at Boyce Park in Plum Borough.
