Walnut Street to Close in Sewickley for Site Work

Columbia Gas also plans asphalt repairs on Centennial Avenue from Academy Avenue to Grove Street.

Walnut Street will be closed at the end of the month from Route 65 while crews with Columbia Gas perform work in the area.  Sewickley Manager Kevin Flannery said Columbia Gas will need a section of the Walnut Street to be closed beginning May 28 to May 31 while conducting work on Walnut. The closing will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Frederick Avenue and Route 65, he said. The street will be open as usual otherwise. Signs will be posted advising motorists of the closure. Sewickley Man Accused of Stealing Donation Jars Meant for Charity

Police say the Walnut Street resident took donation jars meant for cancer patients and area volunteer fire departments. Thefts took place on Neville Island, Scott Township and Peters Township.

A Sewickley man arrested this week is accused of stealing charitable donation jars from several businesses across the Pittsburgh area. Police say the jars contained loose change to help cancer patients and area volunteer fire departments. Ohio Township police Chief Norbert Micklos said they arrested Michael Coyle, 33, of Sewickley, after he allegedly took the donation jar at a 7-Eleven on Neville Island on Jan. 20. Ohio Township police, who patrol Neville Island, charged him with theft and receiving stolen property. But Micklos said Coyle also confessed to similar thefts in Scott Township and Peters Township. Scott Township police said a donation box was stolen from the counter at the Panera Bread along Greentree Road. The theft happened …

Sewickley Council Votes to Lift 'No Turn on Red' Restriction

Officials expect to remove signs at Walnut Street and Route 65 by early November.

Motorists waiting to turn right onto Route 65 from Walnut Street in Sewickley will no longer have to sit and wait for a green light. Council voted Tuesday night to remove the “No Turn on Red” restriction based on PennDOT’s approval. PennDOT sent the borough a letter dated Oct. 3 that authorized the borough to lift the restriction. Sewickley Manager Kevin Flannery said the borough wanted to shorten the wait time for traffic coming off Walnut Street. PennDOT conducted a study that determined the site distances are sufficient enough to remove the signage. In the spring, PennDOT retimed the traffic signals at 19 intersections along the 65 corridor between the McKees Rocks Bridge and Cross Street in Leetsdale. PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said…

The side street traffic has been horrible! The other day I watched 6 cars stack up on Chestnut Street, trying to cross Rt 65 from the river side. Only 2 cars got through before the light changed to red again. The 3rd card ran the red light. There have been times that as the first car in line, you can't even make it across the intersection before the light changes. It might have looked good on …   more ›

Downtown Businesses Remain Open During Road Construction Project

Hours of operation for Walnut Street businesses are posted at both ends of the street.

Don't let the orange construction cones dissuade you from shopping in downtown Sewickley. Borough officials have gone to great lengths to lessen the impact on businesses and make sure detoured traffic is flowing with ease during Sewickley’s five-week road improvement project. Temporary signs redirecting traffic have been posted and large signs also are placed at both ends of Walnut Street listing the hours of operation for stores affected by the roadwork. Sewickley Manager Kevin Flannery said approximately 2,000 notices have been distributed to inform the public about the 2011 road project. A number of copies highlighting the construction plans were given to  Safran’s Supermarket to put in grocery bags, he said. Safran's is one of several …
