QV Athletic Officials Say Olympic Committee's Wrestling Decision Won't Affect Local Interest

Locally, student interest in wrestling is growing.

Quaker Valley's wrestling program continues to grow in popularity, something local coaches don't expect to change despite a recent decision to remove wrestling from the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee announced its decision last week to eliminate wrestling from the Games as of 2020. "As much as the decision to do away with wrestling as an Olympic sport is very disappointing, I do not think it will have an impact on our younger wrestlers interest and development," said Mike Mastroianni, director of athletics and activities. Mastroianni said he believes the energy and enthusiasm generated by the coaches and team at the developmental level will continue to move youth participation forward and keep them engaged in the sport. …

'Foxcatcher' crews returned over the weekend to shoot scenes for the Hollywood movie based on a true story.

Camera crews returned to a Sewickley Heights property over the weekend to shoot scenes for a Hollywood movie starring Channing Tatum. We just need to keep the momentum going, have fun and prepare for our conferences, matches, and tournaments that will take place in early 2013."    Here's a summary of the team's success so far. The agreement is now awaiting final approval from the Western Pennsylvania Inter-Athletic League.

Quaker Valley School Board approved a cooperative wrestling agreement Tuesday night that allows local students to compete together with the Moon Area School District. The Moon School Board approved the same agreement last month. The program must now receive final approval from the WPIAL and PIAA. Board member Gianni Floro told the board Tuesday night that there are a lot of families in the district with up-and-coming wrestlers who want to participate. He should know.
