Sewickley Zoning Board to Render Decision on Former Country Inn Property

The board is expected to rule on the spot zoning matter tonight.

The Sewickley Zoning Hearing Board is expected to make a final decision at 7:30 p.m. tonight on the old Sewickley Country Inn property at 801 Ohio River Boulevard in regards to a spot zoning challenge. The zoning board heard a second round of testimony at last month's meeting after a commonwealth judge ordered a zoning appeal filed by Lawyer Michael Lyons of Sewickley to be heard by the board.   Lyons, Clifford Krey and Hugh McMaster of Sewickley presented arguments against having the property zoned as a mixed-use district.  "This was special legislation—there were provisions in this ordinance that solely benefited this property owner, and actually worked to the detriment of other properties in this borough," McMaster said.  After the …

Sewickley Zoning Board to Continue Sewickley Country Inn Hearing

A resident is challenging the borough and zoning hearing board's decision to re-zone the property.

When the Sewickley zoning hearing board convenes tonight, members will continue a spot zoning hearing involving the former Sewickley Country Inn property. A panel of Commonwealth Court judges has asked the zoning board to consider a spot zoning challenge from borough resident Michael Lyons. In 2010, Lyons challenged the validity of the borough and zoning hearing board's decision to re-zone the former Country Inn property as the "Ohio River Boulevard Mixed Use" area. Lyons raised a formal objection against proceeding on without a temporary third …

Sewickley Zoning Board Approves Presbyterian Church Appeal

The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley appealed a borough code enforcement decision involving the pink house property.

The Sewickley Zoning Hearing Board unanimously approved an appeal from the Presbyterian Church, Sewickley, involving lot consolidation plans that include the Beaver Street property also known as the “pink house.”  The three-member board ruled Wednesday that the pink structure at 202 Beaver St. should be considered a place of assembly under the borough ordinance, overturning an earlier determination from Nancy Watts, borough code enforcement officer. Michael Parrish, church attorney, made the case that the youth center stands alone as a place of assembly and should be classified as a principal use. The board agreed, ruling that Watts made an error in her determination. In August, Watts ruled that the church's proposed use for a youth center…

Sewickley Council Bids Farewell to Fellow Board Member, Appoints New Officials

Councilman Glenn Ford attends his final council meeting, while the board makes several appointments to boards and commissions.

Sewickley Council members said farewell to Glenn Ford Monday night, the councilman’s final meeting after six years of service. Ford declined to seek re-election, and James Morel of Sewickley won the open seat. Morel ran a write-in campaign and received 57 votes for the 1st Ward seat in the November election, according to the Allegheny County Elections Division. He will be sworn in Jan. 2 at the reorganization meeting.  Ford was appointed to council in 2006 after another councilman resigned. Ford later ran for the position and was elected. While it’s been great, Ford said he hasn’t been able to make every meeting due to prior commitments and traveling. He said there was a particular period late last year when he missed more meetings than he…
