Teen Reports Being Assaulted and Robbed in Sewickley

Sewickley police said someone reportedly attacked the youth and took his cash.

Sewickley police are investigating an assault and robbery that reportedly occurred Monday night on a public sidewalk in the borough. Police Chief James Ersher said a 15-year-old told officers he was walking around 7:20 p.m. in the 400 block of Beaver Street, near the front of Bruegger’s Bagels, when someone punched him in the stomach, took cash from him and threw his wallet to the ground.  Ersher said the suspect then ran from the area. The victim walked to Rite Aid before police were notified. He was taken by private vehicle to Heritage Valley Sewickley hospital for an evaluation, Ersher said. The suspect is only described as a male between 18 and 20 wearing a green or gray hooded sweatshirt. Ersher said police still have questions …

Leetsdale Block Party Puts Spotlight on Neighborhood

The “Party at the Nine” block party begins at 2 p.m. today in the 700 block of Beaver Street.

When Robert Ford moved into his home nearly 30 years ago, he never thought someday he’d be fighting to keep his neighborhood intact. But that's exactly what neighbors and members of the Concerned Taxpayers of Quaker Valley say they're going to continue doing following the release of a traffic study commissioned by the Quaker Valley School District. The study presented to the school board last week concludes, among other recommends, that three homes in the 700 block of Beaver Street would have to be leveled in the long-term to build a parking lot, student drop-off and bus turnaround next to the school. “I think they ought to figure out another way, and there are other options," Ford said.  Residents plan to host a block party today hoping …

Have the kids take the bus or walk like I did some 35 plus years ago instead of having mommy take them to school. Make the Police accountable to be there in the morning and in the afternoon like Police Chief Mike Poninsky was back then. Teens Caught Stealing Leetsdale Signs

Police said the juveniles were released to their parents.

A group of teens attempted to steal signs Sunday afternoon from the magistrate district judge's yard, but they didn’t get far. Leetsdale police Patrolman William Dreyer said homeowner District Judge Robert Ford caught the four juveniles around 1:30 p.m. holding two signs from his front yard in the 700 block of Beaver Street. Dreyer said Ford called police and confronted the teens, two males and two females, who stuck around and waited for police to arrive. Two of the juveniles were from Ambridge, one from Leetsdale and one from Bell Acres, Dreyer said.  He said the juveniles claimed they planned to stand on the corner and hold the signs up to traffic.  Dreyer said Ford did not want to press charges, but Dreyer gave the teens a stern …

Utility Work Closes Portion of Beaver Road in Glen Osborne

Officials say the infrastructure upgrades will take several months.

A portion of Beaver Road is closed to traffic from Route 65 to Glen Mitchell Road while crews work to improve underground utilities and infrastucture in Glen Osborne. The road closed Friday to begin work, which involves upgrading water, gas and sewer lines as part of the $4.5 million Glen Osborne Interconnect Project. “For all intents and purposes, Beaver Road will be closed for the next several months while this construction is going on,” said Sewickley police Capt. Rich Manko. Manko said roadway that runs past Osborne Elementary remains open to school buses, immediate residents and Port Authority buses, but that sooner or later those vehicles will have to make alternative plans too.  Contractors have to dig up the street to replace …

Trouble Ahead? PennDOT Plans Route 65 and Sewickley Bridge Work

Sewickley officials expect the work, which begins next week, will have significant impacts on traffic and the upcoming Harvest Festival.

Motorists who think the Sewickley Bridge area is a commuting nightmare now may want to steer cleer of Route 65 over the next couple of weeks. That's because PennDOT is gearing for two projects expected to have a huge impact on motorists traveling on the bridge and Route 65. Borough Manager Kevin Flannery said he received notice Friday of PennDOT's plans to begin work Tuesday, Sept. 4 on Route 65 from the Sewickley Bridge to the Beaver County line. The work will occur during the hours of 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.  For motorists, this will mean one-lane traffic in both directions. The work is expected to be completed in two to three weeks. In addition to the Route 65 work, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, PennDOT is also planning to repair the …

Sewickley Pop-Up Store Offers Treasures from The Attic

New pop-up store in Sewickley offers an eclectic mix of vintage, antiques, collectibles, and decorative accessories that are priced to sell.

Judy Bailey had an idea to take a vacant storefront and put it to good use, turning years of stored treasures into Sewickley’s newest pop up store, The Attic. Bailey is the owner of Soho, located right next door, and the former Bailey & Bailey boutique. She and friend Natasha Green decided to clear out some of the items they have collected or held onto over the years, and put them up for sale. “We have such a conglomeration of things,” Bailey said. Green described the store as an attic and garage sale in a shop, hence the name “The Attic.” Everything is priced to sell, she said. The store carries a hodgepodge of vintage, antiques and collectibles. Items range from a bird house and a brass bed to children's items and window panels. Bailey …

Fashion's Night Out Sewickley Style

Sewickley businesses devoted Thursday night to the international fashion holiday.

One of the most exciting times in New York City is Fall Fashion Week.   Everyone who is anyone will be front and center at Lincoln Center to watch the world’s greatest designers parade their wares. Celebrities and shoppers alike flock to the city to see and be seen and, of course, to shop.  Proudly, this year, Sewickley can be added to the list of shopping towns celebrating a shopping holiday with the first "Fashion's Night Out." A bit of a sluggish start Thursday night was not cause for concern as loads of ladies wandered down Beaver Street in and out of shops that stayed open until 8 p.m. or later. Some really got into the spirit with wine and snacks as well as discounts for the occasion.  Starting on the corner, participants included …
