Poll: Smith Leads Raja in 37th District Race

Democrat Matt Smith shows lead in race to fill seat vacated by former Sen. Pippy, new polling data shows.

New polling data shows Mt. Lebanon Democrat Matt Smith edging out Republican D. Raja by a 16-point lead in the race for Pennsylvania's 37th senatorial district.  The data, conducted by the Washington D.C.-based pollster firm Thirty Ninth Street Strategies, shows 54 percent of voters in the district, which encompasses Moon and Crescent, favoring Smith versus 38 percent favoring Raja.  Four percent of voters in the district are undecided, according to a statement from the polling firm.  Smith, who now represents the state's 42nd legislative district, was nominated in July by Allegheny and Washington county Democrats to vie for the seat vacated by former Pennsylvania Sen. John Pippy, R-Moon.  Raja, a Mt. Lebanon software CEO, captured the …

No one bothered to question the obvious problem that the "poll" had almost no undecided in a State Senate Race by August? Horrendous reporting. Part of the job is to point out the obvious. I was a reporter for ten years. Look for the facts and the obvious spin. Posting it without that is akin to doing the work for the campaign.   more ›

UPDATE: PA Senate Candiate Mustio Promises To Pull Negative Ads

The candidate for the 37th State Senatorial District said voters are tired of negative campaigning.

One of the three candidate vying for the Republican nomination for the Pennsylvania’s 37th Senatorial District is pulling all of his negative advertising, and is asking his opponents to do the same.  “After thoughtful consideration, I have decided to unilaterally pull any political advertisement that mentions either of my opponents names or their records,” said Mark Mustio in a statement issued Friday morning.   “While I still believe that the records of public officials and candidates for public office should be subject to a certain degree of scrutiny during a campaign, that scrutiny should be balanced with an equal degree of decorum and respect. I believe the campaign for this seat has become imbalanced and for that reason I have decided…

The most satisfying result from Primary Election 2012 is the collapse of the wretched, despicable Mark Mustio campaign for State Senate in the 37th District, which set the bar at a new low through a clear effort to appeal to those who are racist and anti-immigrant. Candidate Sue Means, who was given virtually no chance of being a factor in this race, humiliated Mustio by securing an impressive …   more ›

Election 2012: Raja Says Job Creation Central Issue on Campaign Trail

The Mt. Lebanon business owner is running for the Republican nomination for the state's 37th senatorial district in the April 24 primary.

Mt. Lebanon business owner D. Raja said his failed 2011 bid to become Allegheny County Chief executive did not deter him from hitting the campaign trail once again, this time for Pennsylvania’s 37th senatorial district. The former Mt. Lebanon commissioner is vying against fellow Republican state Rep. Mark Mustio, R-Moon, and Bethel Park activist Sue Means to replace outgoing Pennsylvania Sen. John Pippy, who announced his retirement from Harrisburg politics in January. No Democrat is running in the April 24 primary.  “Well, I’m done with that race,” Raja said of his campaign for county executive. “But I do want reform. And I want lawmakers to be accountable.” Raja, owner of the Computer Enterprises Inc. and a Carnegie Mellon and University…

The three candidates for the 37th district state Senate seat, replacing Sen. John Pippy, convened Tuesday night at Peters Township Middle School for a debate. Voters and Republican leaders attended the event, which was hosted by Peters Township Republicans. Former Mt. Lebanon Commissioner D. Raja, Sue Means of Bethel Park and state Rep. Mark Mustio, of Moon Township, answered questions—both broad and specific—concerning their role if they took office and their stance on issues concerning Peters Township residents and those of and surrounding communities. State Rep. John Maher introduced the candidates and Peters Councilman David Ball moderated the debate. The three candidates will face-off in the primary election on April 24. Means, who …

Despite a scheduling conflict threatening to keep Fitzgerald from attending tonight's debate, the event organizer says it's still on.

A debate between D. Raja and Rich Fitzgerald, candidates vying to become Allegheny County executive, scheduled for tonight at Robert Morris University is still on, despite a scheduling conflict. Earlier this week, the Fitzgerald campaign said scheduling conflicts might prevent the Allegheny County councilman from appearing at the event, which will begin at 8 p.m. Thursday in the university's Academic Media Center. The event's organizer, Carrie Moniot, said, "Fitzgerald has another event to attend tonight, but his campaign manager said that he will try to get to the debate by 8:15 pm." Fitzgerald, a Democrat, is running against Mt. Lebanon businessman Raja, a Republican, to replace Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato in the Nov. 8 …
