Giant Eagle Stores Requiring Advantage Card for Self-Checkout Lanes

Customers have to scan their card before proceeding through the self checkout.

Giant Eagle stores are now requiring that shoppers using self-checkout lanes have a store loyalty card. The Post-Gazette reports the supermarket chain recently began rolling out technology in its stores requiring a Giant Eagle Advantage Card for anyone using self-checkout lanes.  The technology prompts customers to scan their Advantage Card before proceeding to scan items for purchase. In the past, anyone could use the self-check out aisles regardless of loyalty card status. Dick Roberts, Giant Eagle spokesman, told the newspaper that requiring an Advantage Card ensures that customers are receiving weekly specials, GetGo fuelperks, cash register coupon offers and other savings. This move also allows the store to contact customers if there …

Observing Passover in Sewickley: What You Need to Know

Here, a list of resources, events and services in honor of Passover.

It’s almost time to break out the matzo. Passover arrives on March 25 this year, when Jews across the world will come together to retell the Exodus story over four cups of wine (or grape juice for those who can't indulge), and of course, a large, festive feast. Passover Traditions As the story goes, during their flight from slavery, the Jews did not have enough time for their dough to rise, resulting in a flaky cracker that is eaten instead of bread for a full week during Passover. The diet changes go beyond bread, however, and depend on family tradition. As a general rule, just look for the “Kosher for Passover” label, which thankfully spreads to more products year after year. Prior to the holiday, Jews clean their homes and get rid of …

Giant Eagle to End Foodperks! Program

The last day to earn the perks will be Feb. 13.

Giant Eagle's popular foodperks! program will end on May 31, but the last day to earn the perks will be much sooner—Feb. 13. The supermarket/gas station chain's fuelperks! program, however, will continue. In fact, starting on Thursday, it will be supplemented by a 3-cent discount on gasoline for Advantage Card holders on the occasions when they don't use fuelperks! Giant Eagle CEO Laura Karet said that the foodperks! program had become "a little too complex." The foodperks! program is being discontinued “based on feedback from customers,” Karet wrote in a letter sent to customers receiving the highest level of savings with foodperks! Giant Eagle began to issue letters to those customers along special offers like $10 off Rewards Cards in …

UPDATE: Moon Township Bear Sighting Reported Monday Morning

A 300-pound bear is first seen ambling through the Moon Plaza parking lot, according to reports.

Moon Police Chief Leo McCarthy called it "extremely unusual"—a 300 to 350-pound bear running through one of Moon Township's busiest shopping centers.  Customers shopping at Moon Plaza spotted a black bear running through the Giant Eagle parking lot at 5:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.  A resident also reported a bear sighting just after 9 a.m. Monday near Flaugherty Run Road.  "It's not the first time (a bear has been seen in Moon) but, this is my 37th year working for the township and we've had maybe three bear sightings in that time," McCarthy said.  "I always thought they hibernated in the winter, but we had a warm spell," he said.  The bear was seen Sunday running toward Robert Morris University's campus, and was then spotted an hour later …

Leetsdale Police: Report of Man with Gun in Grocery Store is False Report

Edgeworth and Leetsdale police get a call about a man with a gun in the Leetsdale Giant Eagle. The report turns out to be false.

A report of a man with a gun at a Leetsdale supermarket, just days after the Connecticut elementary school shooting, turned out to be a big misunderstanding Monday afternoon, according to local investigators. Leetsdale Police Cpl. Michael Slawianowski said 911 dispatchers first alerted the department at 12:30 p.m. to a report of a man with a gun inside the Giant Eagle at the Quaker Valley shopping plaza.  “It ended up being nothing,” Slawianowski said. Police said a McCandless EMS dispatcher thought she heard a radio report about a man walking on Route 65 with a gun. She called to report the matter to Sewickley Academy, where a relative attends. Sewickley Academy in turn called Edgeworth police, who then notified 911 dispatch. Slawianowski…
