Sewickley's Light Up Night is Back in Every Way

Promotion for this year’s Yuletide in Sewickley has been outstanding, and kudos to Village Green Partners for the work they’ve done.

Light Up Night is back, not just the event, per se, but the moniker. It seems the folks behind the sparkle season hoo-ha believed they should get a tribute from all those communities that were using the ‘Light Up Night’ phrase without their blessing. Last year, in Sewickley, I think it was called Get Lit, or Sparkly Bulb Night, Tinkle Time or something like that, but everyone still, in hushed tones and darkened allies, called it Light Up Night. So this year, Sewickley Borough paid the 100 bucks to the Downtown Pittsburgh Partnership, and, now, we can proudly and boldly, without fear of ridicule, litigation or broken thumbs, call the kickoff event for Yuletide in Sewickley Light Up Night ®. This will be the first Light Up Night that I will …

Customer Service — and Comfort Food — Are Always on the Menu

While Nov. 26 puts emphasis on small businesses, Patch columnist believes survival goes beyond one shopping day.

Who says there is no such thing as a free lunch? After Black Friday and the gluttonous attack on the big box stores and their “specials” (which are always limited in number, on purpose) and before Cyber Monday, when all artificial intelligence androids receive a free upgrade and a weekend in "the Cloud," falls Small Business Saturday. This year Nov. 26 marks Small Business Saturday, a promotion that American Express is offering for the second year in a row that encourages consumers to shop at small, local businesses. The sardonic among us would probably say that this is a cynical Amex ploy to look all warm and cuddly, supporting small business. They are even offering $25 of credit to Amex cardholders who register their cards to …

When Stinkbugs Invade

Patch columnist Philip Harris now devotes a portion of his daily life to killing stinkbugs.

As I stood watching my tomato plants burn, I thought of the woman working behind the counter at the Penguin Bookshop. I didn’t mean to upset her; I really was just trying to be helpful, but maybe I shouldn’t have said anything at all. I mean, if anyone should know what it’s like to spend the day alone with a bunch of books and myriad customers who are “just looking” (and are taking notes to go home and order what they want on Amazon), it should be me. I was going through the stacks and found a copy of “Wicked,” a book I’ve always wanted to read (and a play I’ve never seen) and pulled it off the shelf. It was in Spanish. I can read a little Spanish, but I’m not quite ready to make that quantum leap from my Berlitz phrasebook just yet. I …

The solution to the stink bug invasion is the Original Indoor Stink Bug Trap because it kills stink bugs so that they don’t release their foul odor. Google the Original Indoor Stink Bug Trap company and check their website for locations, plus you can get it on Amazon within a day or two. It’s specifically designed to be used indoors, so it’s not an outdoor trap modified for indoor use. And it’s …   more ›

Time to Fix the Roof

As days turn to decades, the world as we know it changes.

I miss Sewickley Hardware. I'm sure I could have picked up some roofing material there; they seemed to have everything, but they are long gone. The village is lucky to have Robinson’s Home and Garden though. I love going into Robinson’s. It’s a real old-time store with a huge hardware selection. Sometimes I just stop in to talk to Rich or Bryan Robinson about different projects -- the latest was the raised garden beds. I got awesome advice. When I was growing up in a galaxy far, far away, my Aunt Helen had a little store with wooden plank floors and a big red Coke machine to your right when you first walked in. I can still hear the screen door slamming and the bell ringing to let you know someone wanted gas. She sold groceries and …

Good to hear from you again Phil! Sewickley needs an edge. I didn't know that the signage project was dead. The last I'd heard was that it was pending for private groups to take over. This is worth looking into. Most of the boroughs have signs, as well as Pittsburgh, and (of course) there's even a sign that you are entering, (and leaving), Pennsylvania! Signs are a classic, low tech solution to …   more ›
