Video: Walter Brannon Receives Special Honor at Dedication Ceremony

Sewickley's first black police chief and Army veteran is recognized for his years of service to the community and country with a dedication ceremony and naming of the Sewickley Valley YMCA Community Arts Center.

Walter J. Brannon appeared humbled by all the recognition Tuesday honoring his patriotic service to the community and the country. "I feel it's a great honor and words can't express my gratitude," Brannon said.   More than 50 guests gathered at the Sewickley Valley YMCA to honor the World War II veteran and first black police chief in Sewickley, during a special naming ceremony and dedication of the YMCA's Community Activity Center. The event included the unveiling of a wall plaque and recognition from Mayor Brian Jeffe and state Rep. Rob Matzie, D-Ambridge. Jeffe read a proclamation, declaring Nov. 14 as "Walter Brannon Day" in Sewickley. Brannon was also presented with an official citation from the House of Representatives as tribute…

I just became aware of this great honor being bestow upon Chief Brannon. He was like a second father to me growing up, since I was in his back yard everyday.   more ›

Co-Founder Retires from Friends of Quaker Valley Schools Board

Timothy Merrill helped start the organization with a single $50 math award in 1977.

A co-founder of the Friends of Quaker Valley Schools education foundation has retired from the board. Trustees of the Friends foundation recently announced Timothy Merrill's retirement. Merrill along with David Nimick and Dr. Nancy Auer started the FRIENDS organization in 1977 with a single $50 math award. The organization has grown to provide annual scholarships to Quaker Valley graduates, annual Distinguished Staff awards as well as program support for the after-school arts and robotics program, the community youth worker and other initiatives. “Tim joins David and Nancy as a retired Trustee, and we thank them for helping our students achieve great success by rewarding them with scholarships and awards,” Dorothy Pollon, president of the …
